1) I want a turbo-6 or a natural-8 or a turbo-8.
2) My fiancée prefers that I purchase a sedan.
3) I prefer that it is decently luxurious - i.e. no Nolan or Mustang.
3) This isn't a weekend car - my fiancée wants a burnt orange Lotus Elise for that.

I've looked at and/or driven (new/used):

Porsche (911/Panamera/2011 Cayenne)
Maserati (Q-Port)
BMW (M3/535/550/M5/750)
Mercedes (C63 AMG/E63 AMG)
Cadillac (CTS-V)
Audi (A6/A8)

Yea, the Porsche 911 isn't a sedan, but it's kosher. The $60k is flexible as you can tell.

What else would you guys look at in the price range and performance range?

My first instinct would say BMW 5-series, but it seems like such a played-out choice. A CTS-V might be nice.

Hell I'd even say Tesla Model S but who knows when those will be available, and for what price?

I'd say 550i if you want mid-sized or M3 Sedan if you want small.

Or a used M5. No way you're getting a new M5 for close to $60k.

Yea, we really like the Tesla Model S. Unfortunately, it's on an unproven platform.

As for the BMW - they are very played-out, but the driving experience is tops.

WE want a burnt-orange Lotus Elise to zoom around in.

But SHE does want me to get a sedan for practical reasons. I prefer sedans too, but I am looking at some coupes.

I know, an M5 would be used. Same with an A8.
I'd say stay away from an A8 or 750 unless you really think you want something that big.

As far as BMW being "played out", who cares? Are you so concerned about what your neighbors think or do you want to buy what you really want? Besides in the 5 series, most have a 528 or 535, 550s aren't as common (around here at least).

Get a 550i! DO EET!

My thought is that maybe she wants a family in the future? A sedan is a good compromise - no need to own an SUV/wagon/crossover just because you have a baby on board.

How about cars that aren't the typical Mercedes/BMW?

Volvo's been advertising the upcoming S60 as a luxury sports sedan. Guaranteed (at first) that your neighbors won't have one. Starts at around $38k for AWD turbo V6 with 300 horsepower.

$38k is also the starting price of a Ford Taurus SHO with 365 horses out of a turbo V6 and AWD. Don't know how luxurious it is inside, but it shouldn't be too low rent.

Infiniti M56S? I can't think of any other cars not on your list already.. I'm partial to the M3 though.

Since you already have Elise for weekend, I'd rather choose something balanced. S4 and 335 would be my first choice. 535/550 and E550 would come second if I wanted bigger one. I would also consider M56 as well.

Oh really? $60K flexible as in $120k flexible?

LOL.

Get the Porsche or the Maserati. The rest are just going to look pedestrian.

Lotus Elise? That's weak. Lotus Evora.

A Volvo is a mega LOL. Ford, perhaps even more so.

Lotus uses Yokohama tires, though...I thought you only recommended THE BEST!

The (new/used) modifier was intended to address your "$120k LOL" comment. If it's $120k new, I'll be looking at a used model.

I agree that the Porsche Panamera and Maserati Qport are the most stylish of the group. However, the Panamera's back seat is a little awkward and the Italian engineering of the Maserati smells like money.

And a weekend car is just that, a cheap and easily-replaceable vehicle that still manages to draw attention at Sunday brunch. A restored Ford Bronco or FJ is on the list.

Can you swing an Audi RS-4?
I can't think of another sedan I'd rather have OVERALL.

Possibly. I was looking at the S5 too. I've heard that overall, the M3 is superior to the RS4.

If I end up with a BMW, I'll get the base level DINAN performance package for the make.

my vote goes to the porshe 4s

As noted above, the back seat 'dog house' is awkward. And although the back seats look extremely comfortable, I don't plan on letting anyone else drive my car, so I will never experience the back seat anyway.

Hell no it's not.... The RS-4 is freaking awesome! Not only does it look better, but it has the same high revving V8 that is found in the R8 supercar...

RS-4 > M3

You are probably going to think I am crazy fickle, but I don't want to buy an Audi without the LED eyebrow. Same with the new Porsche LED running lights on the front facade. It just screams 'last-gen' when it is absent. And unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is going to be a next-gen RS4 according to Jalopnik.
