Hey there, i'm currently trying to buy myself a new computer to build and i've chosen the Q6600 with G0 stepping as my processor. It's pretty much at the top of my budget however i've been told that the 45mn manufactured ones are much much better, due to there obvious reduced heat. However is there that much of an advantages to be gained because the price difference is close to £40.

I'm probably only going to midly overclock, i'll most likely try and keep the stock fan on the Q6600 as i don't want the hassle, realistically whats the best speed i could expect to safely get from it? maybe an extra 0.2 or 0.4 ghz? Could i get even more with a better cooler?

How about the 45mn processors like the Q9300? They'll overclock a very large amount won't they?

I hope someone can give me some advice and figures, thanks guys!

I'd just stick with the q6600 and pick up a little nicer motherboard or cooler. That should be able to help your overclocking more since the q6600 has a multiplier of 9 vs. 7.5 on the q9300

The Q9300 has a low multiplier, so it doesn't really overclock any better than the Q6600 as far as I know. The overclocking advantage of some of the 45nm chips is not quite as large as you might imagine.

With the stock fan you might be ok doing 3GHz on a Q6600, but I doubt you'd go much farther than that. If you upgraded the cooling it's possible to go as high as 3.6GHz, although that's by no means guaranteed.

What's the computer going to be used for? If heat's a concern to you quad core may not be the way to go anyway.

I'd say go with either a 65nm or 45nm Core 2 processor. Stay clear of the 60mn and 45mn ones.

Minnesota, of course.

That's it. It's that new 45 Minnesota chip. I bet those run cold, especially in the winter.

edit: Oh, and welcome to anandtech, Mystic. We aren't laughing at you, we're laughing with you, I promise. Oh, and I agree with iBPJohn's advice. If you invest £15-20 on a decent heatsink, a Q6600 will overclock way, way higher (on average, of course) than a Q9300 on it's stock heatsink.

We have the canadian lingo going on here. And aigo, you are absolutly correct about the cold and water. 10,000 NAMED lakes they all freeze over in the winter.

sunbeam direct touch pipe cooler.

Ximgatech direct touch pipe cooler.

Thermalright Ultra Extreme.

Or a really hot minasota girl sitting onto of it. I'll trade one of my cooling systems for that.

Ironic discussion on a day here in Minneapolis where the temp was about 95 degrees with high humidity...where is the cold weather anyway

I have been very happy with my o/c d Q6600 (to 3.3 ghz stable) with a Tuniq Tower. I think you will be too... I use it for daily use and never really use it to its full capacity.

Except for the folding, of course...
