Well we know now how they will bridge the long wait to Zen4 on AM5 Q4 2022.
Production start for V-cache is end this year so too early for Zen4 so this is certainly coming to AM4.
+15% Lisa said is "like an entire architectural generation"

its interesting that neither company has anything new for the "Back to School" / "Back to Zoom" season in the mobile space.
with all the remote learning, demand for laptops must be yuuuuuj.

Well, presumably they are preparing some faster mobile parts. These would have higher clock speeds at the same or lower TDP. Of course, they could very well be unobtanium as well.

When I first saw that, I thought it was desktop models. That would've been very impressive indeed. Not to take away from the laptop chips though, possibly even more impressive.

You are skipping Zen3D. I am surprised AMD is delivering Zen4 next year at all.

Why would they put off an entire 5nm product they've had in the pipes for years just to spend a few extra months trying to milk Zen 3D?

If you were to use their usual release schedule, then if we're to treat Zen 3D as a whole new product refresh that gets it's own series, it would mean that we wouldn't expect Zen 4 CPUs until the middle of 2023 or even later.

Something would have to have gone colossally wrong for AMD to commit to that kind of plan. I can see plenty of arguments for Zen 4 launch being slightly delayed given that the pandemic has thrown a spanner in the works of every company, but it doesn't derail Zen 4 that badly.

Not if Zen 3D launches at CES.

Yeah but where would that have fit in the roadmap? Were they really going to bump Raphael down the road in favor of "Zen3+"?

I think the main purpose would have been to get AM5 out there.

If Zen 3D launched at CES as the Ryzen 6000 series, launching Zen 4 as the Ryzen 7000 series later that year would create a comically short product cycle.

That's why I don't think it acts as any kind of new generation of product. Instead we get a few special Ryzen 5000 parts which also serves as a nice marketing bump for the rest of the series.

We get Ryzen 6000 in the form of Zen 4 sometime in the second half of 2022. Perhaps a bit behind AMD's usual cadence, but not unusual given the pandemic.

Which is why I suspect Zen3D will be an 'XT' style part. Launch XT, then later next year (Q4 maybe CES, but I doubt it, probably closer to the beginning of Q4), launch Zen 4 and sell both concurrently. If you have AM4 you buy Zen3D. If you are building new, buy Zen 4.

Either that, or both will be part of the 6000 series, but the Zen3D parts will have lower model numbers.

I don't agree, for the simple reason those will be for two different markets. One is extending the life of the existing AM4 market, one AMD previously stated will only be officially supported through 2020. The other will be creating a new platform, and as such start from zero again. Both markets can easily exist alongside each other for some time.

It could very well end up being:

Q4 2020: Zen3
Q4 2021: Zen3D
Q4 2022: Zen4

This would be for desktop

But as I posted before, if server Zen 4 CCD / MCM comes out first (say mid 2022), AMD could switch to Threadripper Zen 4 being released before regular Ryzen desktop Zen 4.

I had the 486DX2-66 in my 2nd PC. Imagine my dismay when Computer Shopper told me that it was just double clocked so slower than a 486DX-50. Still, that didn't stop me dreaming about the triple clocked 486DX4-100. Here's what I had at various points of my life and my dream CPU next to it:

Pentium non-MMX --- Pentium MMX
Pentium II --- Pentium III
Celeron 700MHz --- Pentium III 1.13GHz
Sempron 2GHz --- I was happy so didn't dream
Core 2 Quad Q9400 --- I was happy so didn't dream
Core i3-2100 --- Core i7-3770
Core i7-3770 --- Core i7-5775C
Core i7-5775C --- Some future CPU with double this CPU's single core Geekbench 5 score

EDIT: Mistakenly mentioned 486DX4-100 as quad clocked.

They decided on Zen 3D instead. It's really not that confusing.

One was an introductory product to launch AM5, while another is a life-extender for AM4. Not quite the same thing.

They should name these Ryzens 5900DX and 5950DX just for nostalgia reasons.

(you may be too young to understand this)

Wherever it may be, my 386DX40 stirred for a moment before returning to its eternal slumber.

Ryzen IMO is pretty good. At least it was in the context of AMD coming back to the game years ago.

Threadripper is so-so but at least it is pretty self explanatory.

Epyc sounds a bit childish. As it was a CPU for gamers or something. I wish they could have kept the Opteron name but that one lost its shinny armour long ago I guess.

Well, IMO
