6600GT,6800GT,X800Pro, or X800XL for BF2??

Hey all...I've been perusing various forums trying to figure out which is the best bet for a video card to play Battlefield 2 with everything turned up ..at least at 1024x768. Here's my current hardware, first off:

Athlon XP Mobile 2800+ (333 fsb) oc'd 2088 ----> 2355mhz
1 gig pc2700 dual channel (soon to be replaced by DDR400)
Samsung 160gb 7200rpm 8mb

So that's what I'm workin with. Right now I've got an old TI4200 AGP 8x 128mb that of course won't run BF2 plus is struggling with most new games. I'm will to spend around $300 (grudgingly) for something that'll run BF2 with everything high and will last for a few years. I've owned 2 radeons (7200, 8500) as well as the ti, so I'm fine with either one.

So...

Which would you guys suggest among the X800Pro, X800XL, 6800GT, and 6600GT?

At first, I was thinking of just picking up a 6600Gt, but I'm not sure how long it would last. Plus, I've gotten tired of turning down settings in games ... so I'd like something that'll take whatever I throw at it. Any thoughts?

Otherwise, in the ~$300 range, there's the X800Pro, XL, and 6800GT ... and that's where it's hard to really decide.

Dunno really, but if you want to Max everything you need another 1gb ram for sure and a cpu upgrade wouldn't hurt. You are right though, it gets tough choosing between those 3.

Thanks guys...man it seems to be quite an undertaking to get my machine up to spec just for a game. I have half a mind to build a new Athlon64 system and switch PCI-E since the video cards seem to be a little cheaper in that form. Plus at least 1.5gb of RAM ... lordy. And then I read I can flash an X800Pro ViVO to an X800XT...

Option 2 is to take advantage of my NForce2 Ultra board and buy 1.5GB DDR400 RAM and get the 6800GT AGP8x. Would that suffice for BF2?

Either way ... alot of change plus the $50 for the actual game lol...

I guess the problem is, I have to wait until late August if I wanna rebuild.

And today my machine started shutting off randomly. Reinstalled XP (clean) ... and it's doing it again. Ran Memtest86 on both 512's separately and together and they passed. I have no idea what's going on. PSU?

tru dat! You need 2 GIGs of RAM for BF2, its such a memory hog. The 6800 GT then X800 XL depending on AGP or PCi-E and the price you want to spend. I just got a BFG 6800GT OC for 335 and couldn't be more satisfied when it comes to gaming.

I have almost the same system as you. I only have 1 gig of ram, but I do have a AGP BFG 6800 GT OC. BF2 runs great. Granted I havn't been on any ranked or 64 player servers yet, but am very pleased with how well this game runs on my computer. In fact I was worried, cause I kept reading about lockups and slow loading times. It really is a fun game when if you don't have problems (like me).

I did the "renderer.drawfps 1" command and it constantly said around 70/15. I didn't really notice any glitches or problems that would effect gameplay. My monitor only goes up to 1152x764 at a decent refresh rate so I run that with everthing high, and AA on. Only exception is that I turn dynamic shadows off cause they look ugly in many spots (especially the shadows from the helicopter blades).

If you don't want to build a new computer I bet you would be impressed with an AGP 6800 GT.

I can confirm that BF2 played on a 6600GT is a no-go. I got through the intro just fine, but in gameplay it would be smooth for a few seconds, then stutter for a few seconds, at 800x600 with medium settings. It also hurts that is a 128 meg card I suppose.

I played the demo with High settings on my 6800GT at 400\1000 and it was perfectly fine for me.

The X800XL and 6800GT are both basically equal in performance. If you want SM 3.0 support, I would reccomend going with the 6800gt. With agp, the 6800gt and x800xl are mostly equal in price. I would reccomend the 6800gt.
