Hi all,

I upgraded from an ATI 9700 Pro to a new XFX Nvidia 6600GT AGP the other day. It's a good step up from the previous board for 3d gaming, but I've noticed that my 2D speed and video quality have taken a bit of a hit.

I'm running with a Dell 2001FP connected through the DVI port at 1600*1200.

2D speed is noticeably slower than the ATI card, and I've also noticed that video played through Windows Media Player (as well as cyberlink DVD, etc) is a little fuzzy. I've already replaced the drivers twice to no avail.

Any ideas? I ran the ATI uninstaller program to clear out the remants of the prior card.

Use driver cleaner to remove the old ATI drivers, do a google search on it, what you're looking for is a program called driver cleaner 3, run that, then reinstall the nVidia drivers. See if that helps.

I also went from an ATI card to an Nvidia card and experienced slower 2d, but I had a 6800 instead of a 6600. It was especially bad trying to scroll through threads at the guru3d.com messageboard using Firefox while my previous ATI card didn't have any problems at all. I never was able to find a fix (I formatted, tried all kinds of drivers, new power supply and motherboard) so I sold the 6800 to someone who didn't care about 2d speed and now I'm waiting on the x800xl and a good Nforce4 board instead. I guess either I had a bad card, even though 3d works fine or no one else really cares about 2d speed enough to say anything.

I think you're probably right.. With 3D being the 'sexier' selling point, 2D performance at 16x12 is probably not a top priority for these folks.

This article, http://www.anandtech.com/video...oc.aspx?i=2295&p=2, refers to overclocking and specifically asks the reader to make sure they are tweaking 3d and not 2d. Is there in fact a 2d overclock option? That might fix things.

I think you can try overclocking the 2d speed with coolbits, but I don't know if it will help, and even if it does it shouldn't have to be done. I'm using an old Radeon 8500 right now and its faster than a brand new Nvidia card in 2d. I was thinking it had something to do with the broken features in the 6800 cards, but if its a problem with your 6600 then I guess its not.

Heh, everyone I talked to about this thought I was crazy for caring, but I spend alot of time in 2d and I paid for an upgrade not a downgrade in speed even if it is just 2d.

I completely agree with you. Although I wish I could spend all of my time in front of my PC playing games, I unfortunately spend about 60% of it doing work in 2D applications. The fact that upgrading to this board makes my fast PC feel slower is really irking me. Maybe Nvidia can improve some things in their drivers to make things go a little quicker. Perhaps I will write to them and see if I get a response.

It would be nice if Nvidia could fix it, then I could save some money and get a pci express 6600gt. Oh yeah, I just remembered this but you can try turning down hardware acceleration in the advanced display settings. That sort of sped up 2d for me, but randomly after rebooting it would slow down again and it messed up the cursor in 3d.

I just switched from an ATI 9800 to an Nvidia 6600GT and haven't experienced any 2D speed issues. Scrolling through forums works just great. I wonder if something isn't going wrong with your setup?

Can't really comment on the quality. The new card looks good enough for me and I also run 1600x1200, albeit not on an LCD.

Course, it would help if I was paying attention. I've got a Nforce4 motherboard and so of course I'm using the PCI Express 6600GT. Wonder if there's a difference between the AGP and PCI Express cards?

Drivers did not install correctly. Driver Cleaner. Reinstall latest WHQL drivers from nvidias site.
Also, install the LCD's correct driver. A disc should have come with it.

yes there is.the most noticeable difference is the processor and memory have been rotated on the pcb alittle to fit the agp controller chip.and then the memory is different.pci-e comes at 1000ddr were as the agp comes 900ddr.
