I love these forums and figured it was time to post something. I iwsh i found this place earlier.

anyway, i'll get to the point: im in the market for a new agp video card and i was wondering if the extra price is worth it for the 6800. The 6600gt seems like a good card and the one i was leaning toward getting. Any reason why i should go with the 6800 instead?

i would go 6800NU

those 4 extra pipes could really help, plus, some people ( i think ) have unlocked the other 4 pipes to get 16

yeah its quite a lot faster, espically if you can unlock it and overclock it. from what i've seen people get about 380 core, not sure about memory

yup got me one, cant unlock the pipes tho. im running at 390/830 and thats wat runs best for my 6800. i would defently choose the 6800 over the 6600GT, the pipes and posiblilty to unlock the other 4 pipes is greater than the $20-30 price difference

Please list your current specifications.

Also, please list information about your monitor. (Screen size is important here too.)

If you have a "mid-range" system, with a mid range monitor, you might consider the 6600GT actually.

If you have a higher end system, the 6800NU is a decent card that you might get lucky with.

outpost.com has bfg 6800's for 249 I believe...you may be able to find a deal in the for sale/trade forums.

Get the 6800nu.

Compare:

6600GT 500/1000 8pp 128 bit RAM doesn't mod past 8pp

6800nu 325/700 12pp 256 bit RAM may mod to 16pp/6

just wondering if i could get it cheaper elsewhere?

because this is quite a bit more than the $200 or so it would cost me to get a 6600gt

Outpost has the bfg 6800 ultra oc for 350 after a 50.00 rebate

Well, it's kind of iffy there... (By the way, are you talking PCIe or AGP here?)

If your monitor only supports 1024 x 768 with a solid refresh rate, getting a 6800NU might be a little overkill..

Are you planning on getting a larger monitor soon?

Just read what Anandtech had to say on November 17th 2004 about the 6800 vs. 6600GT (at least as far as Half-Life 2 is concerned...)

"For Half Life 2, it does not seem that the extra price of the GeForce 6800 is worth it - the 6600GT does a fine job on its own and performs just as well for much less."

Also...

"If you?re spending $200 - $300 you?ve got (...) the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 is 12-pipe underclocked version of the 6800GT/Ultra and currently sells for close to $300, however in Half Life 2 the performance of the regular 6800 is not any better than the cheaper 6600GT, thus making our NVIDIA recommendation clear."

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2278

Also...

You aren't guaranteed an unlockable 6800 model. It's a gamble. Are you a gambling man?

P.S. If you do plan on upgrading your monitor soon, sure, get the 6800.

Without unlocking, don't they perform about the same and isn't the 6600GT better for video playback?

thanks gentle,

after reading that hl2 review i feel pretty confident about getting a 6600gt, the performance was basically identical at all resolutions

what do you all think of this one here?

I have a BFG 6800 OC NonGT/NonUltra that I got from Best Buy for $300. I was able to unlock the extra pipes and am now running 16/6 @ 385mhz. My memory is at 780mhz. It runs great for a $300 card.

The 6800nu is only faster than the 6600GT when you have your resolution maxed out and have all the eye candy, like AA, turned on. As long as you don't totally max out your graphical settings, the 6600GT is just as fast.
