I'm thinking it's about time to upgrade the 6600GT I have to either a 7600GT or 7900GT.

7600GT starts at ~ $145
7900GT starts at ~ $240

I could go with the 7600GT, save some cash and put it towards a A64 X2 4400+. Or do I go with the 7900GT, spend a little more and put off the 4400+ for a few months more.

Comments?

A faster won't help you that much in games, what cpu do you currently own?
If you have amd 64bit 3000+, buy a X1800XT for around 220$.

If you play at 1280*1024 or below, then go 7600GT. If you play at higher than 1280*1024, go with the 7900GT or X1800XT.

If you get the 7600GT, I suggest you don't upgrade for quite awhile...

If you get the 7900GT, don't mention upgrading your card again.

If you get the X1800XT, you MIGHT want to upgrade in the very distant future. (When I say VERY DISTANT, I really MEAN it!)

I currently own an XFX 6600 GT. I ordered the Gigabyte GV-NX76T256D-RH GeForce 7600 GT for $185 with $15 rebate from ZZF. Wierd name, but it has a totally passive cooling system. At 1024x768 in Oblivion, the 7900GT gets 33fps, the 7600GT gets ~25 fps, and the 6600GT gets ~14fps.

If you are already using a socket 754 or 939 platform, sinking money into the video card will give you the best gaming performance boost.

In almost every case, every penny spent on a faster video card will reap more rewards then buying a slower video card and upgrading the cpu.

I said in most cases, there could be an extreme exception or two.

A high end video card would increase your performance in games much more than a midrange video card and a new cpu (if you already have a semi-decent cpu).

I have a 3000+ currently. I have been bouncing around the idea of which upgrade(s) to get first, cpu and/or video. The type of games I play are not FPS and I miss having 2x CPU's in my machine for all the other stuff I do on the computer which is why I think I want to upgrade to the 4400+ sooner than later. Thus I am leaning towards the 7600GT and than 4400+. If I then sell my current 6600GT and 3000+ the whole upgrade doesn't sound that expensive.

Then X1800XT is out of the question. My past experiences with them are less than steller. It is not going to be anything other than an nVidia card.

I've had no problems playing any of today's top games pretty much maxed out at 1024x768 and some I can even play pretty much maxed out at 1280x1024.

Cheapest 7900GT is around 250~ or more nowadays. X1800XT is around 280~ or more.

Maybe a X2 3800 with 7900GT?

Anyone got any benchies handy that show X2 512Kb vs. 1Mb cache performance? I'm curious if maybe stretching for the 4400+ is too much for very little performance.

Who will make your video card if Nvidia poops on you too?
