I wonder when we'll see another deal like last year's retail boxed 4790K for $250 at Microcenter.

Well... Say hello to the monopoly. If Zen fails, expect the chips getting 30% more in the best case. Well... Time to see ARM with other eyes...

So, is this just Newegg and other retailers jacking prices, or is this Intel raising them?

Retailers. Getting rid of the older stock.

4770K 350$
4790K 350$
6700K 350$
6700K comes without a cooler but recommended price didn't change one cent. Heh.

Removing the HSF from all enthusiast class SKUs would allow Intel to cut costs without compromising on product quality – not to mention the average end user wouldn’t have to pay for something they would never use anyways.
Yeah right. No cooler, cheap TIM and the same price. What's next.

Considering that the good TIM and the cooler cost both 50 dollars.... Definately it got increased by that cost. And to make it worse, it is just the beginning... Once AMD dies with that money you will be lucky to get an i5....

This is the time where all prices go up before the holiday sales regardless of what discount they see then.

no i meant what happened to the 329 USD quad from intel with hyperthreading?

2600k, 3770k, 4770k were all under 330 USD.

then the 5775C and 6700k are 40-80 dollars more.

is it the cost of a die shrink?

It is the cost of stock buybacks. Apparently someone got sick of Intel stock only being worth $17 for so many years.

6700K is actually $350 + $41.50 (TS15A CPU cooler) = $391.50. Or $399 + $41.50 = $440.50 if using the actual CPU price in the OP.

http://hexus.net/tech/news/cooling/85604-intel-ts15a-lga1151-twice-size-retail-lga1150-cooler/

For previous CPU generations the CPU cooler was included.

So $440.50 for 6700K vs $350 for 4770K. Almost $100 more. That's a big price increase when we're having close to zero inflation and interest rates.

IIRC, the stock 4770K cooler was generally discarded by overclockers, though.

Its a shame, because a lot of people buying the 6700K won't instead buy the 5820K and overclock it to 4.4 ~ 4.6 gHz, and get an additional two cores.

This is the reason I've been going with the -E parts for my last two builds. If I'm going to spend $350, might as well spend another $50 and get more cores, or higher memory bandwidth and more performance.

I don't blame Intel for this though, its retailers trying to recoup dollars spent for product & keeping said product in the warehouses, taking up shelf space.

I can confirm that this also happened all across the board in Germany. Except that here they simply exchanged $ for €...6700k 428€...which is...outrageous. You can get some "tray" versions here for like 10€-20€ less...but in that case you will not be able to guarantee that it isn't a CPU that hasn't just been sent back after someone was unhappy with its' OC results etc...which is very likely due to the German laws on internet business. (You can send anything back within 2 weeks without giving a reason...so OCers often order multiple CPUs, only keep the best and send back the rest)

Usual FUD from you I see. Despite you know its retailer markup.

I can buy the 6700K for 335$ and the TS15A for 25$ if you insist on that cooler.

Newegg has a auto-gouger that sometimes gets a little screwy. But given the low supply, I wouldn't be surprised prices are going up.

It adds cost but offers little value to the customer. Lose/lose.

I'm sure there were people who bought the 4790K plus an cheap H97 board and just gave up the overclock. The stock cooler is adequate for that. It just throws another 30,40 bucks you have to spend.

Why would they give up the overclock on a H97 board? It can overclock too since the Pentium AE bios update roundup.

You could get good deals on 4770K too, if you were prepared to wait long enough until such a deal shows up.

But the problem here is that Intel's bad 14 nm yields result in low availability, thereby making it possible for the stores to make use of that and add extra markup. So the "average actual street price" goes up more than we saw with e.g. 4770K.

And even going by the list price including CPU cooler, the 6700K is significantly more expensive than the 4770K was.

For overclockers, yes. But not in pre-built OEM machines, which most CPUs end up in.

Anyway, now that Intel decided to not include a CPU cooler any longer, they should at least have reduced the price correspondingly. I.e. by $41.5, because that's what they priced the TS15A CPU cooler at and considerer it to be worth for the end consumer.
