Great work, about the results I expected. The 4.5Ghz vs 4.4Ghz boost, about the same where it's not using the extra threads. But now you have twice the threads and cores moving forward.
3700x never boost at 4.4Ghz in games. Its more like 4200-4300mhz.

Solid upgrade, and great value. For pure gaming obviously it's a bit of a wash, but for multitasking and general use it's exceptional. And since the 6700k is still a fantastic gaming CPU, it and the board will command solid resale value to make the upgrade relatively cheap.

I particularly like how Zen2 doesn't really need more than 3200 potato memory, or even premium power supplies.

Finally someone benchmarks against an older overclocked CPU! I really have to think what I want to do based on these results. I have a 6600K @ 4.6 GHz and while the hyperthreading on the 6700K surely helps I have no real problems with my CPU paired with a 2080 Ti playing at 1440p and 4K.

Upgrading to 3600 starts to seem a more sensible option for gaming.

Nice review that compares a very popular Intel cpu from 3 years ago to a current AMD cpu.

I was going to compare my R5 3600 and RX 5700 to some of your game results, but unsure of what settings you used in game. I know I have the two Tomb Raider games in my steam library at least. I'll have to check on others I might have.

Nice review!

I would love to do a many game review, but I only have about an hour a day to play with the new setup.

I dont use in game benchmarks.Only far cry games and war thunder are tested with in game benchmark.
I am testing in most cpu demending parts of game like geothermal valley in ROT or that big lost city in shadow, novigrad in withcer3, rattay city in kingdome come. Also my witcher3 is moded with maybe 30mods settings 1920x1080 all max no AA.
here are test scenes in ROT and w3(its old from 2017 with different HW and resolution, but test scene is same:

For reference, these are the scores I get with Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark with a 6600K @ 4.5 GHz and 2080 Ti at 1080p. Raytracing was off, ultra settings, DX12. Windows 10 64-bit version 1809.

Code:
CPU g = CPU game
CPU r = CPU render

Fps | CPU g | CPU r | GPU
Min | 110 | 72 | 129
Max | 248 | 393 | 348
Avg | 169 | 127 | 172
95% | 124 | 75 | 139

This is almost entirely CPU bound, 7% GPU bound according to the stats. Going up to 4K makes it 79% GPU bound.

I felt a itch to upgrade and play with zen2 but I suspected what the OP quantified.
My opinion is that as time goes by the 3700X will age a lot better even when regarding gaming than a 6700K.

Realistically software will only take advantage when existing hardware base is widespread and until 3 years ago 4c/8t was gaming highend with 4c/4t being the common denominator.

Had my 6700k @ 4.7Ghz since the 6th of August, 2015. Sad to see that 4 years later there are only minor improvements for gaming.

My next upgrade will likely be a 8C16T Icelake, assuming it has the 15% IPC gain and 10nm can clock to 4.5Ghz+.

@Dave2150

IceLake may never come to desktop.

If Icelake doesn't come to desktop, the next generation after that will. Intel will not use the Skylake architecture forever! It can safely be assumed from my quote, that I mean the next desktop CPU from Intel that has an architecture different from Skylake, whether that be Icelake, Heatlake, Tumbleweed-Lake, etc

I think it is on the software side.
Anyone starting to develop a game 4 years ago was either targetting PS4/XBOX One CPUs or 4c/4t and 4c/8t desktop CPUs.

I'm pretty sure Zen2 IPC is higher than Coffeelake overall but when the software doesn't use all the resources avaiable (like in gaming) the faster clock of the Coffeelake more than makes up for it.
The problem is that while you can make the architecture wider (Icelake/Zen2), getting the clocks to the same speeds on these smaller nodes doesn't seem an easy task.
So Icelake seems to be in a similar scenario as Zen2 vs Coffelake - higher IPC but lower clocks mean performance is not that muich higher or even lower in light tasks.
It will be an interesting couple of years.

Intel is in a good spot, ipc-wise, if the ICELAKE IPC is really this strong.

Better grab a chair and sit while waiting.

10nm only for mobile and server cpu's.

Really new Intel desktop cpu only with 7nm and that will be in 2022.
7nm production will start in 2021 but only for new gpu's and server cpu's.

Meanwhile AMD will have Zen3/Ryzen4000 in 2020 @ 7nm+ and Zen 4/Ryzen 5000@ 5nm in 2021.

That is, in a nutshell, what I was saying before. Intel hasn't put any 10nm desktop CPUs on their roadmaps at all that I've seen. We might get Rocket Lake on desktop, but nobody exactly knows what that is (yet). Only things for sure are 9900KS in Q4 2019 and Comet Lake on desktop sometime in 2020. Comet Lake has to go up against Zen3/Ryzen 4000 next year. Or Rocket Lake does, but again . . . lots of question marks about that one. Both Comet and Rocket are 14nm.
