I was really looking forward to playing cod 2 but I can't manage dx9 at decent settings without it feeling "laggy". I tried 1024 x 768, no AA and medium quality but it still didn't feel that good. Any suggestions besides new hardware?

i have a geforce4 ti4200(the good asus version) and i run cod2 at 1024x768 no AA medium settings and its extremely playable. the smoke slows me down a bit, but its really only noticeable in multiplayer. soo... yea..i dont get it.. you should be doing fine. my rig is worse in other respects too, xp2200+ not oc'd, 1gb pc2700. *shrug*

If you force directx7 shaders you will get considerable performence gains but the loss of alot of eye candy such as really high detail textures, some smoke effects, bump mapping ect.

I've got a ti4200 as well, run at 1024x768, and as nugglets says, the smoke is the only framerate killer I've got. (XP 2800+, ti4200, 1GB PC3200)

Some basic console commands get me about 30% more framerate for some reason:

r_gpusync 0 - default is at 3, which favours multiple GPU setups
r_multigpu 1 - default is 0, again favouring multiple GPU setups

Those two alone usually get me around 25% boost in framerates. I'm looking around for something which lowers the smoke quality. Just played the tank levels, and when I'm driving at the front of the pack I get 45-60 fps, but when I'm behind other tanks in their dust and smoke it cranks down to 10-15 fps

Great game though

Find yourself some console commands and try them out for you.

Yeah, I should think it's definitely your RAM. I had 2GB installed and it played without any hiccups. Unfortunately one of the DIMMS was bad, so until the RMA coems back, I'm on 512MB PC2700. Tried playing COD2 and BF2 again and the performance difference was huge. This is with an X2 4400+ and 2 GTXs mind you.

Buy another stick of RAM and you should a good performance gain. And some of the tweaks on here probably couldn't hurt.

CoD2 seems to favor 7800 GTXs and or AMD X2's , on my P4 3.3ghz / 6800GT CoD2 runs pretty crappy even with no AA @ 800x600, on my X2 4800+ / 7800GTX it runs much much smoother even with 4x AA / 8X AF enabled. Other games such as FEAR run pretty good on the P4.

the r_multigpu 1 command mentioned above gives a slight boost in framerate even if you're only running one card.(I havent tried any other tweaks yet) you can see the differance by typing cg_drawFPS 1 in the console which will display the framerate.

If you want to play on DirectX 9 with all eye candy on you need...imo....at LEAST a 7800GT... A64 FX Series and A64 X2 Series...2GB of RAM and even a decent sound card...onboard isnt going to cut it...anyways I play COD2 @1024x768 with all eye candy full but forcing DirectX 7 in which I get around 70-90 FPS both on Single and Multi

Umm, check my sig; could not make this thing play any better than a slide show at any reasonable resolution. If i have to force a game so low in details or res just to play, i don't usually play.

I play it just fine with everything on and 2AA. I have to play it on 1280*720 on my LCD though so its like playing on a 17' widescreen, which while not ideal at least I get to play it.

You've got to be doing something wrong. Like those other posters, I too have a geforce 4 ti4200, with 768 ram, an xp2000 and it plays very well. I have all the eye candy on low but could probably crank a few of the settings up a bit. This makes me believe you've got something else going on to warrant your problems...

So what's the verdict here? You can see my setup in my Rigs, but once I get it setup I'll have a Venice 3200+, 1GB RAM (maybe 2GB soon), 6800GT that will OC to 430/11xx, and an Audigy 2 ZS. If I have to drop below 1024x768 to play this game, its not getting one damn cent of my money. Thanks

All you ti owners are playing in dx7. When I play in dx7, I play at full detail, 4xaa and 16xaf with no problem at all. It starts to feel laggy when I switch it into dx9 mode so I think I may as well leave it on dx7 for now.

I disagree, it runs very well on my AXP 3200+, 6800GT @ 400/1100 and 2gb of OCZ plat setup, and that is even with onboard soundstorm audio. I will do some more tests tonight but so far I am pleased.

I have to agree 100% with the OP. I have a 6800 and 3.0GHz P4 with 1GB of ram, and it feels very laggy when playing multiplayer. But ONLY when i have it running DirectX9 mode and no matter what resolution or settings. It gets playable at 800x600 with low details and no lag at all, but i cannot play at that res. I select DirectX7 mode and then it runs flawless at 1280x1024 2XAA, and high detail. So until someone finds a 'fix' i'll stick to mode 7.

You really need 2GB for COD2 to run really smoothly. I'm on an X800XL 452/1160, 3000+ @ 2.7 GHz and 1GB RAm @ 300 MHz and I can't play at 1280x960 with Extra/Extra/Extra settings. 1280x960 High/High/High texture settings is barely playeable with 2xAA but not acceptable IMO. So I'm stuck at 1024x768 4xAA, Extra/Extra/Extra texture settings . . . (I refuse to run DX7)

Oh well, my 7800GT is coming soon, too bad I've already finished the campaign . . . will go back and replay though when it arrives . . .

I'm another case of crappy graphics, but still a good rig...

AMD FX-53@2.5ghz
Dual 6800Ultras
Asus A8N SLI
1 gig GeIL
Audigy 2
3dMark05: 10351

Russian campaign plays like a dream at max settings, 4xAA and everything, but as soon as I hit the Brits, there's a serious drop. The Americans looks like it's running on a 486, but when I get back to the Brits the second time, it smoothes out a little bit for awhile, then drops back down. I really don't want to play on DX-7, it's almost insulting, ya know? Especially since I played FEAR completely maxed out and it ran like a hot knife through butter...

I played CoD2 on xbox360 (Walmart) and was very impressed with how it looked and ran, it was running on an HDTV LCD @ 720P and other than some motion blur caused by the LCD I never saw the framerate slow down the entire 15+ minutes I played. It was pegged 60FPS.
