I've got a ti4200 as well, run at 1024x768, and as nugglets says, the smoke is the only framerate killer I've got. (XP 2800+, ti4200, 1GB PC3200)

Some basic console commands get me about 30% more framerate for some reason:

r_gpusync 0 - default is at 3, which favours multiple GPU setups
r_multigpu 1 - default is 0, again favouring multiple GPU setups

Those two alone usually get me around 25% boost in framerates. I'm looking around for something which lowers the smoke quality. Just played the tank levels, and when I'm driving at the front of the pack I get 45-60 fps, but when I'm behind other tanks in their dust and smoke it cranks down to 10-15 fps

Great game though

Find yourself some console commands and try them out for you.

Its not really any of my business but why do people with low end systems purchase new graphic demanding games. If i were you i would save that 50 dollars for an upgrade, heck a 50 dollar card would outperform your ti4200.

Hmmmmmmmm....maybe because they want to? Or maybe because they don't have the dime to drop on the new hardware? Anyways, dx7 maxed out is not really that bad. They graphics still look really nice!

One thing you can do to make your performance go up in dx9 or dx7 is set 512 as how many megs of memory the game uses (my default was 200). That upped my performance a bit

bump

I think Activision might come up with a fix for this whole DirectX7-DirectX9 problem in their next patch there currently working on...DX 9 doesnt look good if your resolution and settings are low anyways so I would recommend for most players to play it at DX7 for now

Looks like the difference is ram. 2GB is recommended it seems for higher resolutions.

I'm playing at 1600x1200 with 2xaa, max settings. Pentium 630, 2GB ram, 7800 GTX. Runs smooth as silk.

You will need more RAM and check to see which version of the drivers you are using. The newest drivers do not mean the best. I use 71.79 without problems.

It's not that bad dude. Check my sig. I play at 1280x960, full detail, no AA/AF and it runs smooth as a baby's ass.

Gamespot's CoD2 write-up indicates CPU and RAM don't matter (at all!), it's all down to the GPU. Some of the #s are strange, tho. See a 6800GT only ~15% faster than a 6600GT and a 6800GS a ridiculous ~40% faster than a 6800G, which puts it above a X850XT. I can't figure out the bottleneck. If those #s are right, then your 6800 should slot in between the GTs at an unplayable 17fps. Obviously max detail is not an option for just about everyone.

Edit: The article also explains the two settings Patt mentioned.

I disagree, it runs very well on my AXP 3200+, 6800GT @ 400/1100 and 2gb of OCZ plat setup, and that is even with onboard soundstorm audio. I will do some more tests tonight but so far I am pleased.

Disagree. CoD2 is not a killer with RAM, and 1gb will usually cut it. I play at 1280x1024 with full eyecandy (4xAA, 16xAF), and it runs choppy when you scope / heavy battle scenes on my 7800GT & 3700+.

When I switched to a 2405FPW, I was asking for hell. I have to use 1680x1050 with no AA

I play everything maxed out, every effect on high with:

a64 1.8ghz
1GB ram
7800GT

at 1280×1024

Never experienced any kind of lag whatsoever

edit: I'm also using onboard sound

Run in DX7. It doesn't look that bad. If you want DX9 though, turn off shadows and smoke edge thingy and leave on dynamaic lights at low. It'll give you most of the effect. And no Anistropic Filtering, just Trilinear. This is what works well on my bro's X800 Pro. That and 800x600 res. But maybe you'll find it acceptable at 1024x768.

I don't think COD2 is a killer on RAM, 1 GB should be fine as DLeRium says. I think that Battlefield2 "RAM Scare" has everyone rallied up.

Umm, check my sig; could not make this thing play any better than a slide show at any reasonable resolution. If i have to force a game so low in details or res just to play, i don't usually play.
I have a similar system. I play at 1024x768 and turn everything on.

You are mistaken.

It's impossible for an AGP 6800NU to be slower than a 6600GT. It has the same fillrate, more vertex processors, and higher memory bandwidth.

An unlocked 6800NU is significantly faster.

BTW I have a 6800NU AGP, had two PCIE 6800NUs, and have two 6600GTs, and have benched them all a lot. I know what I'm talking about here.

I've got the AIW X800 XT OC'd to X850 XT speeds (540/580) and I can play COD2 @ 1280x1024 4xAA 4xAF with everything cranked and it kicks ass. I also only have an XP 2800+ (Barton, not OC'd) with 1 gig of OCZ Platinum Edition Dual DDR 400 ram. I'm also running DX9 so the smoke and particles are very detailed.

i had a 6800nu unlocked and OC'd to 380/850, and COD2 just killed it @1280x1024 in DX9, i was averaging about 30-40fps through most of the game and sometimes dipping into the mid 20's. i changed it to DX7 and my frames jumped to 80+ at same resolution

This game is a real video card killer in the DX9 mode. It runs decently at 1280x960 with no AA on my SLI setup, but if I go any higher it stutters in some places. The DX7 mode doesn't look all that different and more than doubles the framerate, so I just use that instead.

My rig is a bit similar (less on the GPU side, more on the cpu) I'm running with everything maxed @ 4xAA (except corpses at medium). Since my monitor is crappy I've got to run at 10x7 to get a RR of 75hz. But I've had no slowdowns.

Yep, I play DX7 too... too laggy in DX9... the good thing is it enables me to run it @1280 with 4xAA and get very high fps.

i play it on my rig at 1600x1200, 2 AAxQ and 16x AF, and it usually around 30 FPS average, which is barely playable. I have everything maxed, but i would think i could get more performance out of this rig. I hope they fix the dual processor bug.

I have a Dell 256MB 6800 vanilla...seems to work fine (for me) at 960x600 with 4xAA. But I don't HAVE to have even 40+ FPS, much less the "recommended minimum" of 60+ FPS.

Looks good enough for me.

Right now I can play at 1024x768 with AA on and my native resolution of 1280x1024 if I turn it off...I've got the 6600GT and it seems fine.
