What gave you that idea? Do you mean GPU limited?

I too got uber depressed after throwing in my gt and running timedemo. Everyone seemed to be beating my numbers with a friggin 9800pro. I then ran the bench again with vsync off, and my numbers were in line with everyone else. Not alot of ppl post if they're running vsync on or off, seems most are posting with off. I get pretty bad tearing on my monitor if i dont enable it, so it stays on.

Hmmm, i leave it on in D3 also because i did notice quite a bit of tearing... However,

1600x1200
Ultra Quality
2x AA

37.2 FPS - V Sync off

57.0 FPS - V Sync On

Quite a difference..

And who would have thought 60FPS was possible on the release of Doom 3

He used Doom 3 as an example, so I did too, smartass.

Hm... yeah, I had vsync on. When I turned it off, I got 48.3 fps. Not a huge improvement, but I guess this is more along the lines of how my card should be performing in my current system, huh?

Yup. I got a 6800 - regular; if you can still return the card I would get the regular and use that money for the other new parts. The improvement in performance over the regular was not enough, at the resolution I play at, for me to warrant an extra $100+tax

I use 100% of my cpu in all 3d games, i was giving an example of my low end graphics card, on a low end (graphics wise) game. I know im not CPU limited, i was showing that isnt how to measure it.

I used to think that too, till I tested both, and found that the regular 6800 just isn't that great. The 4 closed pipes are defective 99% of the time according to Guru3d's testing, so you'll probably never be able to open them. Also, the ram is MUCH lower quality. You really can't overclock the base 6800's that much, while the GT's can overclock into the Ultra-Extreme levels.

A good writeup on the flaws with the 6800NU is here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gf6800-oc.html

I was really happy with my 6800NU.. Then I picked up a BFG6800GT-OC and was blown away by how much faster and better it was, and best of all, no artifacting/Tearing in Farcry which I was getting tons of in the 6800's. Also, the 4xAA seems to be bugged in the 6800 - at least the eVGA brands I tested. $100 is easily worth it to get the GT in my opinion.. At first I didn't think it would be, then later after testing, it was painfully obvious that the GT is a much better card.

Your system is the bottleneck - your RAM is slow and doesn't have much bandwidth (you're running PC2100 or maybe 2700 single channel on that i845D chipset), and your FSB isn't that fast either, since you're on a B series processor (533 stock vs 800 stock on the C's).

Current benchmarks are all run on P4C chips or Athlon64's, both of which have much more memory bandwidth and higher FSB speed.

While the newer systems are going to benifit from the faster FSB and DDR speeds the i845* is still quite capable. I'm running an Abit IT7-MAX with a 3.06@3.35 with my memory at 198Mhz and my machine plays Doom III like a dream with a 6800NU. My benchmarks on timedemo1 seem to be inline with the 6800NU benches out there at ~35FPS (1280x1024, high).

I realize my 845 is a bit higher clocked than the posters and I'm not running a GT but the 845 is still capable. I just can't bring myself to buy a mobo with PS2 ports after having this board.

I just broke 72FPS on the Time Demo with my BFG6800GT-OC... Thats at 1600x1200 2xAA+8xAF High Quality... ASTOUNDING level of performance if you ask me!

Your ram is a major issue, as is your chipset, and i'm betting you are 4xAGP, and if thats the case, its pointless even having a 6800 if you aren't running 8xAGP.. It DOES make a big difference..

While FSB and RAM speed are certainly a factor I haven't seent anything that says 4x vs 8x is making any sort of difference on the new line of cards. I'd certainly like to see some benches performed on the same hardware though (with doom III).
