My friend is trying to get the most out of his video subsystem and the FX5200 is not cutting it.
I whole heartedly agree with anyone suggesting a complete overhaule for this machine but this person is tight that he squeaks when he walks...
So he asked me this mornig if a 6800 will run on an INTEL 440BX? And second if it's worth it?

What processor does he have in there? Alot of 440bx's only supported up to 600 mhz P3s, though some did go higher, it is a slot 1 board correct? Personally I upgraded a rage 16 to a 9200se in mine and it runs fine, but it's probably lower in performance then that 5200.

If he really wants wants to do video editing, it's probably better to put the 200-300 he's going to invest in a 6800 and buy a new motherboard and cpu. The new integrated video 939 boards, ATI xpress 200 and nVidia's 6100/6150 probably have better video performance then that 5200. Then when he's ready, he can upgrade the video card with a newer PCIe card.

I concur that it's not worth it. But if he must... then he needs something from the 5000/9000 lines, that has 2 notches it the slot connector, one it for the older AGP types.

The 6800 would not work (or fit) in the INTEL 440BX. These days, only universal AGP cards can be used in AGP 1.0 (2X) slots. The best video cards that could be used in a Intel 440BX motherboard would probably be a GeForce FX 5950/5900 series, Radeon 9500 series, Radeon 9700 series, or a R350-based Radeon 9800 Pro (not R360 9800 Pros/XTs, as they do not have the universal AGP connectors), but these cards would be extremely CPU/system bound on Intel 440BX motherboards. I personally was able to use a 9800 Pro in an old Intel 440BX rig (which had a AGP 1.0 [2x] slot) when my main rig was incapacitated for a short time. However, the 9800 Pro was heavily CPU/system bound by the Celeron Tualatin 1.4 GHz, FSB 100 and PC100 SDRAM.

However, I would highly recommend a system overhaul rather than getting a modern video card for an old motherboard like Intel 440BXs.
