from the 6600gt -> 6800 is only like a 50 dollar differece. Should I spend 50 doll hairs more and get it or not?

I heard something like you can buy a 2nd 6600gt later and run them both dual, but isnt that pci-e only? and whats wrong with getting a pci-e type vid card, everyone is saying to wait for the agb, does agb have better performance or??

What's the diff between GT and Non GT 6800

Mem 128 vs 256 also the mem is only ddr1 on the 6800, were it is ddr3 on the gt and it runs at a 1000mhz
and default speeds of gpu and mem are lower on the 6800
and the 6800 only has 12 pipes where the gt has 16

The SLI is only for PCIe.

Buy a card now and enjoy, you could spend the rest of your life waiting for what is just around the bend.

By the way, my 6800gt showed up 2 days ago and I must say its the BEST upgrade I have ever done.

Oh and I dont have a clue what agb is??? do you mean agp?

AGP is the standard right now, PCIe is whats on the way.

Mine is an agp card.

Let me tell you that his has been the BEST upgrade I have ever done. I had a 9800pro flashed and overclocked to an XT.

I got mine from Newegg with a full version of FarCry, a free newegg watch and shipping for $392
The card I got is made by EVGA.

i'd have to recommend, looking/waiting around for bargains, i've seen the 6800 go for 250 shipped, either way though, i'd say the 6800 is a better card flat out

If it was up to ME, I would choose the 6600 GT. Although the 6800NU has the 256 bit memory bus and 4 more pipelines, I like the fact that the 6600 GT uses DDR3 RAM. Maybe I'm just weird.

It's also a lot cheaper and it's a pretty good performer looking at the benchmarks...

The answer to this depends on how much money you have, how much you value performance, and your box.

There are no AGP 6600GTs to buy now, and I don't think there are any PCIE 6800s. So if you have a PCIE board the decision is made.

The softmod capability may well give the 6800 the edge here. I'll put it this way, I haven't bothered to put my GT back in after softmodding, which is a pretty strong endorsement of a softmodded 6800.

I would get 6800 because of the softmodding, but there's always a risk for that.

I'd get a 6800 because there is always the possibility of it being capable of being softmodded. The 6800 for around $250 isn't a bad deal either.

Anandtech actually did a review with both a 6800 Standard and a 6600 GT. Speeds were comparable.

(6800 vs 6600GT)
Aquamark3 1024*768: 54.5 vs 54.4
Doom3 1024*768 (no AA): 80.1 vs 79.0
Doom3 1024*768 (4x AA): 52.0 vs 41.9
Farcry 1600*1200 (no AA): 59.3 vs 39.2
Farcry 1600*1200 (4x AA): 17.8 vs 22.4
Halo 1280*1024 (no AA): 46.8 vs 49.2
Halo 1600*1200 (no AA): 35.1 vs 35.7
UT 2K4 1600*1200 (no AA): 47.5 vs 42.8
UT 2K4 1600*1200 (4x AA): 19.4 vs 22.6

For most games, the 6800 slightly beat out the 6600GT. Halo seems to be the exception. Those ultra high resolutions with AA enabled are a red herring - sure the 6600GT beat out the 6800. However, framerates below 30fps are really unplayable, so those results are more for reference than real life playing.

Keep in mind that the 6800 series is AGP native. The 6600 series is PCIe native. When bridging from one to another, there will be a very, very minor speed penalty (less than 1%). It'll also take a month or two for an AGP version of the 6600GT to be released. I can't justify a $300 video card, so I am waiting for the 6600GT myself.

No vid card is worth $400 IMO, either wait till the price goes down or get a cheaper card.

Rich people don't have to "justify" spending X amount of dollars on a certain item So I guess it becomes more of a question of "if I could afford it, would I get it?"

And, I guess the answer is "yes" because a lot of people seem to have these $400 - $500 video cards and they are still in high demand But I'm one of those people who can't afford the top of the line so it's 6600 GT for me too

This one is $299.99 shipped, .01 away from 300 so your still safe. One thing I can't quite remember though is, can the 6800 Golden Sample hit 6800GT speeds? I can't remember if you overclock, it's still covered or if it's rated at 6800GT speeds and that's why it's a GS...can someone help out this nOOb please?

I'd go the 6800 route myself. I just picked up a Chaintech AA6800 which is a 6800nu. It was able to activate the full 16 pipelines and 6vp using rivatuner and it runs 435/910 without artifacts using the stock cooling. A very nice pickup for a little over $250.

If I remember correctly, there was a disclaimer in the review stating that the 6600GT/X700XT system was using a 3.4EE P4 (PCIe) while everything else was run on a 3400+ Clawhammer. So obviously the 6600GT/X700XT figures are going to be slightly blown out of proportion.

I would think that might be applicable for lower resolutions (say 800*600 and below) where things are CPU dependant. However, at higher resolutions, things tend to be more graphics card dependant.

I'd go with the 6800, and see if it softmods for extra benefit. Leadtek is supposed to have top image quality. Now the Gainward GS...I'm not sure how far they cover with the GS. Typically it always meant they guaranteed you'd hit the next speed grade of a video card. I think they're only counting the GPU though, as I doubt they'd be able to make any cards that were guaranteed to 1000mhz DDR1.
