I'm looking to upgrade from my weary 5900,,,lol
I'm still running an NF7-S(v2) nForce2 chipset board also,,heh

Should I get a 6800 or a 7600? and would there be any compatibility problems?

Thanks

go with a 7600GT if you can afford it....they are faster than all of the 6800 series...and use less power as well.

Id go for the 7600. I cant foresee any problems though.

7600 > 6800 in terms of power efficiency, lower heat output, smaller card size, etc. 7600GS = 6800GS more or less, and 7600GT is noticably faster than 6800GT. Personally, I'd avoid the 7600GS, as I had one, and it chugged a bit with games at 1440x900 @ high details. 7600GT is very nice.

it might be bottlenecked by his cpu.
According to apoppin it isn't...

it will be...but more of a concern is the PSU requirements...which are pretty high.

the 7600GT would be a safe bet....plenty fast and doesn't require a super duper thang dangled PSU to run it.

I would love to find some more benchmarks comparing the vanilla 6800 to everything else.
Plenty of 6800GT benches, but no love for the vanilla 6800.

Vanilla 6800 was not a very good buy considering the 6600GT was cheaper and performed almost the same (especially at lower res)

on an Athlon XP you are going to be pretty bottlenecked going to a 6800 let alone a 7600..

I was bottlenecked on my 2500+ Barton (with my 6600GT)

try getting X1950pro if you are willing to spend $200 because its can beat the crap out of the 7600GT easy. Also CPU is not a bottle neck. You may see a GPU bottle neck if you have a AMD 64 3200 with SLI 8800GTX.

Hmm...

I went from my 2500+ Barton to my current 3200+ (both 512MB RAM at the time)

AND the difference in terms of settings was (EDIT - in Far Cry)

1024x768 0xAA 2xAF

VS

1024x768 4xAA 8xAF

Look for something like this

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=45&threadid=1998533&enterthread=y

Much faster than the 7600GS/1650Pro .. should be cheaper too .. I had a 7600GS PCIe and it was pretty disappointing.

EDIT : Look at this :

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=202&card2=434

The 6800GT slaps the 7600GS around easily ..

and look here

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=202&card2=458

The 1650Pro doesn't have many pipes/etc, pretty much a weak card like the 7600GS.

The 7600GT OTOH, is a real contender. But for a budget AGP box, the 6800GT will own ..
