6800 restarting issue

I finally got around to hooking up my 6800NU into my system specs are:
2400+ XP, 512 RAM, VIA Chipset (Gigabyte to be a little more specific), 6800NU (replacing GF4 Ti4600).

I installed the drivers for the VIA motherboard from the evga.com website and downloaded the 61.76 drivers also from their website. I currently do not have a monitor driver installed but I never ran into issues using just a "plug and play" setting before. I also did not use driver cleaner or any other program like that to uninstall my old VideoCard as I was under the impression this is more of an issue with Nvidia -> Ati.

The problem is: when I restart the computer it boots up again with colored blocks on the screen. This doesn't happen if I "shut down" the computer and hit the "power on" button again or if I turn off the main power switch in the back off and turn it back on again. The problem only occurs when I restart the computer either manually or through the START menu.

I tried a few different power cable connections thinking that may be the problem but even with it going straight off the power source this still happens. I plan on reinstalling Windows tonight so if it's a software issue with Windows like not uninstalling the old Video Card that won't matter but I'm afraid that when I reinstall Windows during the auto reboots this will occur and become a hassle.

Any thoughts about this are appreciated.

I dont get it. Do all you guys buy the VIA chipsets because their cheap? or their incompatability. I dont know how they behave with AMD platforms but they weren't very stable without installing the latest 4-in-1 AGP drivers on most of my PIII P4 systems. Sure VIA chipsets are very fast, but thats it. My experience. Try new AGP drivers.

Hey, maybe I can help a bit on this issue. When I first received my eVGA 6800nu, I some issues with it as well that I was able to work out. Good thing is that I had almost the same exact system as you at the time.

The one thing that stands out to me the most is:
installed the drivers for the VIA motherboard from the evga.com website and downloaded the 61.76 drivers also from their website.
You say you installed the Via motherboard drivers from evga.com. I'm assuming you are talking about the Via 4-in-1's? If so, can you link me to the page you downloaded from, and also give us the version number of those 4-in-1's? I always kept my computer up to date driver-wise, and I had the KT333 chipset at the time. Unfortunately, at some point, the higher version of the 4-in-1's became incompatible with higher versions of the forceware drivers. I didn't know this at the time, though.

So basically, after hours of trying to get things to work properly, I finally sniffed out that the problem was the newest 4-in-1's that I had installed on my older motherboard. I used my motherboard driver cd and installed the 4-in-1's that originally came with the board, and no more problems.

The moral of my story here is that the newest 4-in-1's are only compatible with the newer Socket A chipsets. If you do not have one of these newer chipsets, this may be your problem. Provide the link to that Via driver you downloaded, and also find out what Via chipset you have (we need more info that just it being a Gigabyte).

The 4.51 4-in-1's were the drivers I had problems with. I would suggest taking the driver cd that came with the motherboard, and installing the older 4-in-1's to see if that fixes anything.

Alright I will try that when I get home in 8 hours. I was under the impression that the VIA drivers were for Windows. The glitching (screen covered with colored blocks) or whatever you want to call it occurs as soon as I restart, before it even gets past the initial load screen for the bios.

Yes I know. It was a rhetorical question. But you left out incompatability in your quote.

I know I left out incompatability, you didn't have to point that out .

Whoops! I just glanced over your post initially, and didn't realize this was happening before Windows even started loading. You are correct in that the 4-in-1's are for Windows only, as they are just drivers. I apologize.

So, with that said, I'm not sure what the problem would be. Sorry

I'm going to try a driver cleaner when I get home and check the power supply even though I'm pretty sure it's 420W. Maybe something is conflicting when Windows Shuts down... oh I don't know

Hi,
I just purchased a Galaxy 6800 128 Mb.
Installed the card and I get nothing but blocks and colours at bios startup.
I am RMAing the card as this is a sure sign its knackered according to overclockers tech support.
PS why can I not use the standard reply button? Only quick reply works?
Phil

That is what happens to me but only when it restarts. I rather not deal with returning stuff if I don't have to. I don't know if I want to flash my bios either as that may not fix the problem anyway. I'm running Award 6.0 probably released around the end of 2002. If nothing else works I may just end up never restarting
