If someone explains how to softmod this card I will do mine and let you all know the results. I am not normally an overclocker or tweaker so be gentle. I have Riva Tuner but am not sure what to do with it.

This will officially void your warranty.
This kind of modification can permanently damage your card.
Do it at your own risk (and expense).

im not sure this mod can permanently damage your hardware seeing as how if you the pipes and vp are not able to be unlocked you can just uninstall rivatuner, and if you get artifacts you can uninstall rivatuner, resetting the 6800's back to 12 and 5.

Anyone who unlcoked theirs run Aquamark 3?

I have ran all the 3dmarks and played many games without any problems. I then go to try Aquamark 3 to be greeted by a memory dump caused by either my drivers or the hardware. Is it the card or the drivers? Thank you

I went ahead and returned that PNY card and got in on the BB deal with the rebates and purchase of HL2

Stock speeds were still showing under 6000 with 3Dmark 03
I was able to unlock the shader but a no go on the pipes
I have not done any OC'ing as of yet as I am way to busy killing facehumper things in HL2 LOL

I am still wondering though, what is causing my 3dMark to be so LOW when I see people getting STOCK speeds at 8-9000???

I downloaded the "free" version of 3dmark03 which doesn't include a few options or tests. could that be it?

I am also going to update my Mobo drivers and my bios to see if that helps.

Still though, it just seems pretty low.

Well, what CPU do you have? That can play a big factor. I have a XP-M 2500+ @ 2.2 Ghz and my stock speed in 3DMark03 w/ the BFG 6800 OC was 9021 and it went to 9807 just by unlocking the pipes and shader. After over clocking I'm right at 11K. I am also using the free version of 3DMark03. If you have a decent CPU then I would recommend reinstalling your video driver.

BFG 6800OC. My pipes unlock, but I get little red stripes usually only on white colors....too bad for me. I was able to unlock the 6th vertex processor, saw about a 100 increase in 3dm03. Overclocked at 375/775 totally stable, which gets me to 10,200 on 3dm03 (up from 9500 stock). It dies at 400/800, so time to play with memory and core separately to see if I have more headroom. Temp gets to 70C with stock cooling.

madmikee, you are having a run of bad luck. Given that half of these cards unlock, the odds are in your favor if you trade out that 6800 one more time!

Hi all!

I read through the opinions and I think the bfg 6800oc is not so good. Only a few of them were able to overclock. I would like to buy a 6800 but I don't no which. I would like to buy one which I can switch on the 16/6.

Which is the best? Pny? xfx? thx

Uhhh... luck of the draw? I have PNY and am able to unlock everything. I don't think manufacturors specifically go for unlockable ones... or non-unlockable ones for that matter.

That's a given. Your card is doing more work now. It wasn't too bad for me, though. I might drop an NV silencer on my card eventually, but it never peaks over 75C when overclocked at 350/850, and usually idles in the lower 60s. These temps appear to be about right compared with other users. However, it never hurts to lower the temps. Hm...my computer is a money hole

Even though I am the only poster with the Gainward card, I think it is a good bet for unlocking. Mine is the Golden Sample which costs the same as the PNY and is actually $5 less than the BFG. These Golden Sample cards have traditionally been great overclockers, possibly because Gainward uses hand-picked GPU's and memory modules with them. I also like the Expertool feature which allows you to overclock the card without voiding the warranty (called Enhanced Mode, the speed is 350/800 on mine) and regulate the fan speed.

Speaking of temps, is 72C running too hot. It would be for a CPU but I am not sure for a GPU. Does anyone know what Nvidia suggests for a maximum operating temp?

Where did you buy your?

Newegg. I buy just about everything from them, and they have never let me down.

Even though the card does perform well, I am thinking about selling it in favor of a fanless video card. Even at the lowest fan setting I can still here it over the other fans in my computer (which spin about 2k RPM). I don't game all that much, and this card is probably overkill. I doubt it would be hard to sell it since it can definitely run with everything unlocked.

72C idle? That might be a bit high.
Mine is idling right now at 60C.
If you're loading at 72C, though, that should be fine.

Let me just clarify something. In RivaTuner, I'm overclocking in the driver settings. I've left the drop down box on the top right on Standard 2D. This means that the adjustments I make will stay in effect as long as my PC is on, regardless of whether I'm playing a game or not. Is this correct? I just want to make sure because I've got my memory all the way up to 850 and I still haven't seen any artifacts in HL2 or 3DMark05. If this is not the case, what do I set it to for the overclock to be in effect at all times. It's either standard 2D (which I have it at), low power 3D, and performance 3D.

AMD 64 3200+
Gig o' Ram
Asus K8VSE Deluxe mobo
Fresh install of Vid card drivers

I still haven't updated my mobo drivers etc as of yet.

Damn holidays are getting in the way of my computer time LOL

Once I update the Mobo I will see where it gets me. I think that is where my bottleneck is

Plus I am using the LATEST drivers from NVidia so that also may be why I am seeing problems in 3dmark. I have heard that some of these newer driver sets are causing slight problems within the programs like 3DMark and Rivatuner.

I will probably scrub the drivers off the system and reinstall the .81 drivers unless someone else has a suggestion as to which drivers are the best so far to use.

Other than that HL2 runs FLAWLESSLY at 1024X768 with everything cranked except for AF/AA

Is that idle or when playing a game? Mine idles at 54C (BFG 6800 OC, running at 380 core, and fully unlocked). I can get that hot if I play something very intense though.
