6800 Ultra or X800XT Platinum

I've looked at quite a lot of different comparisons for these. And it seems that the X800XT Platinum is better....but then sometimes it seems to do terribly in some of the tests and unless they've got the PE and the Pro mixed up I don't understand it.

Can anyone tell me which is ACTUALLY better? (Can't get the Ultra Extreme around here).

The X800XT PE seems cheaper than the Ultra and better especially when there's AA and AF on...

Thanks guys.

both cards are top of the line, I don't see how you could go wrong with either.

It's like amd vs intel (except in that case, amd wins)
it's a matter of what you want.
You can get SLI with the 6800 which makes it better then the x800

depends on his rig, if he is using an AGP setup the answer to the question is simple.

It will probably be AGP.

If I go PCIe it's a choice of the 6600GT or the X800XT Pro.. and I'd rather have the XT800XT PE. SLI doesn't really seem worth it at the the moment.

That is unless someone can give me a good reason not to.

So what's the answer if it's AGP? Go the 6800 Ultra or the X800 XT route?

Slightly off (my) original topic but...

Given the choice between the 3500+ Athlon 64 or the P4 3.4Ghz (Not EE) everyone'd take the AMD?

I've got an XT PE, it's a great card. I had a 6800GT, it was as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either, but I don't see XTPEs as cheaper than Ultras.

Wild card is how long you're keeping it and when SM3 games come out. (not to mention what they do with it)

You also don't mention if you use Linux, if so, only nVidia.

Yes.

It does seem to be cheaper, maybe it's only here? About 50 quid less I think.

I think I'll have it for quite a while, needs to last. Obviously SM3 games will happen but I'm not sure how essential it'll be.

No Linux, just XP.

Like I said in my first post you can't really go wrong with either card. If he has an AGP setup
and the $$$ he will get the best performance money can buy with either card, I am not biased
I like both offerings from ATI and NV. So to answer your question IMHO I say either card.

I've had both a 6800GT oced to Ultra speeds and a X800XT PE and the X800 was faster in most of the games I played. (FarCry, UT2004, HL2, Halo)

what if you would have had a 6800 ultra overclocked to ???

These days it really boils down to availability, I bought my 6800GT when it first came out
and would easily have purchased ATI if the tables were turned. The margin of difference
is so neglible that most people could fully experience HL2 or FC equally w/ either card.

6800UE>X800XT PE>6800U>X800XT>6800GT>X800 PRO

I would get the XT PE since you get slightly better performance (fact) and its 1 slot and runs cooler.

I agree that both cards are great and I recommend the 6800 series cards to a lot of people who I build computers for. I was just letting you know what my experience has been with the two series.

When I compared the oced 6800GT to the X800XT PE the X800 was at stock speeds so the argument could go both ways when you ask what would have happened if I'd used an oced 6800 Ultra.

Bingo. ^

I would go for the X800XT PE, if you can actually find it, that is.

As for A64 vs. P4...well there is no competition currently.

For gaming, A64 > P4 by miles.

ATi has the edge in shaders while nVidia has the edge in driver quality and OpenGL performance.

I went with the 6800U but really both cards are excellent.

Whichever you like most. We still don't know if SM3.0 will give the performance edge to Nvidia, they both run very fast and ATi for sure will be a top performer using PS2.0b, as Nvidia will be a top performer with SM3.0. I'm very pleased with my 6800GT, and I like the features it has, but It's all about tastes with this generation in the high-end market.

Looks like the X800XT PE is winning so far.

Is the Shader 2.0 on the PE much of a problem? Will it become a problem?

sm3.0 will be used a lot probably. both cant brag too much about image quality anymore since they both use performance enhancing, image degrading tricks like brilinear optimization.(semi bilinear textures passed off as trilinear). the XTPE seems faster though, but the AMD64's sheer power may pull the 6800U to the top over the slightly slower P4s.(Yes get over it even the P4EEs cant overpower the FX55.)

It doesn't have to. We know that PS3.0 brings a performance boost for Nvidia users, but PS2.0b is great also. Also take into account Nvidia works with higher precission (32bits vs 24bits) so is not exactly an apples to apples comparison. Go with whichever you like most, you won't regreat whicever the choice you take.

Every day I wish my XT PE had SM3 when I play Far Cry and ..........and ..............and.......

Supposedly around 13 upcoming games are SM3 but Painkiller, LOTR, and Vampire were on that list and we haven't seen the patches yet.

I think only nVidia and the developers can answer when it will be an issue.
