Hey guys,

You can see the specs for my system in my signature. Now I have the cash to buy a new GPU and am wondering if it's worth the upgrade. I currently have a 9800 Pro and wish to upgrade it to a 6800 Ultra. Is it worth the upgrade? My system is only AGP but I feel its a pretty nice machine and don't want to dump it for a while (hope it can last me till 2007), so I am trying to eek out what life is left in the AGP slot. Is this upgrade worht it? Will my system be much faster for the money I spend? Or should I stick with my 9800 Pro? Or save the cash and buy a better AGP card that comes along (if any ever will)?

No,

First, I'd see what the next gen cards have to offer, I hear NVs next cards will be pci-e only but who knows.

ATI may put out their cards in AGP too,

I'd wait and see.

The 6800GT is your friend.

Most GTs will hit Ultra speeds, & they are alot cheaper

i would keep the money and save for a new rig. that 9800 pro will be able to run games for at least another year.

Do you need to run at 1600x1200? If not, a 6800GT is a much better deal and a good match for your 3.0 GHz.

But if the games you're playing now are fine on your 9800, wait like BouZouki says for the next generation cards to come out, to offer a better value or at least drive down the prices of the current generation.

The performance difference between last generation and current generation is very large. The performance difference between current generation and next generation is ......

You better believe it. Here is a review of a system with 1 gig of ram and P4 3.2ghz Northwood => X800XT/Pro and 6800Ultra vs. 9800xt and 5950Ultra. Performance increases are ridiculous.

Start Benches Here

My recommendation would be to wait for G70's launch on June 21st (10 days away). Once you analyze the performance increase and see what your budget is, you might be able to pick up G7800GT for $399. That's what the ultra costs right now anyways. Also 6800GT AGP is about $300 right now. It should drop even more by then. Just 10 days to wait for some nice deals on old cards, or faster performance.

My Nickel says to wait a few weeks until After the new cards are released, and then go buy either a 6800gt or an ultra. I have an Evga gt that does ultra speeds, and then some.. the prices will be falling soon.

yes but what most people dont mention is that ultras are made of high quality memory and other parts, and they overclock better than 6800gt's

THanks for the advice guys. Do you think maybe I could squeeze some more performance out of my 9800 Pro on the cheap by overclocking it? If I bought an Artic Cooling AVC-RT1 I could mount it on my 9800 Pro and OC it. Or would the performance increase be so miniscule it would be a waste of my time?

I've never gotten any incredible performance boosts from overclocking GPUs, but knowing that my hardware is performing at the very max of it's capabilities makes me feel good.

I've got a 6600GT AGP now, I think I'll wait and see what the midrange 7 series card looks like before I upgrade (7600 GT anyone?). If the past is any indication it might offer close to the speed of current high end cards at a ~200-250 price point.
