I have the money for both the 6800 and the 6800gt but the gt is about 100 dollars more the the reg. 6800 is it worth it or could just overclock the 6800 alittle and get close to 6800 gt results. If anyone knows where i can look at benchmarks comparing the two that would be great.

6800 = 12 pipelines

6800GT/Ultra = 16 pipelines

overclocking cannot make up for deficencies in the number of pipelines

Schadenfroh is right, you won't make up that difference OCing.

On the other had, check out the difference in Far Cry between a 6800NU and a X800Pro at 10X7 4X8x:
http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?cat=grfx&id=325&pagenumber=3
$300 6800NU = 51fps $400 X800Pro = 58fps
Not so big a difference for $100 is it?

The GT is a much better card, it also costs much more. You'll have to decide if the extra performance is worth the extra $100.

Yes its definitely worth it.

A NU6800 has slower and less memory, as well as fewer pipelines. Unless you're very good with a soldering iron, there's no way you'll overcome these differences between it and the GT.

Here's some benches between the two that have one BIG problem:

Problem? None of these shows 12X10 4X8X, which is the highest resolution/detail a 6800NU runs well! The performance on a 6800NU gets cut in half when you bump it to 16X12 4X8x.
E.G.
PainKiller, all highest settings, sound on, Quality, 4X 8X

10X7
FPS 29/131/255fps (min/ave/max)
12X9
FPS 29/107/250fps
16X12
FPS 29/41/239fps
Note the drop from 107fps average at 12X10 4X8X to 41fps average at 16X12 4x8X.

Anyway, the GT is worth the $100 more, but you probably wouldn't notice any difference if you ran the 6800NU at 12X10 2X4X, and not much difference in 12X10 4X8X.

I may well buy a GT when Doom3 comes out, if I do I'll confirm this theory as I think 12X10 is the only useful comparison on these two cards, as all 6800s are cpu limited at 10X7 4X8X and perform about the same there, and the 6800NU isn't powerful enough to run the 16X12 4X8X at all. (memory limited- much lower bandwidth, half the RAM)

Looking at Anand's reviews you find that the 6800nu leads the value charts (mouse over them for the value ratings). Personally the 6800GT is a nice card, but I play at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 on most games and don't use AA at all. Not what most people do, but that is me. I decided to save the $100+tax and go with the 6800 - it is a HUGE jump over the 5700ultra I was running.
