As the name indicates AGP6800GS, the new card is based on Nvidia's GeForce 6800GS chip, which is clocked at 350 MHz and runs on 12 pipelines.

wtf? where's the 75 other mhz gone? it's worthless!

this is what i wanna know

XFX's premature release also comes in 75Mhz short, but i think it had faster ram. my best guess is that the AGP versions are going to be based of old NV40/NV4(whatever was used for the 6800NU)

which means 130nm = no high clocks.

this makes the 6800GS not look as promising, as it does on PCI-E

If it is using the NV40 chips that leaves open the possiblity of unlockable pipes maybe. Would be decent with 16 working pipes and 256MB of video RAM.

One shouldn't have to overclock or unlock/uncripple pipes to have a decent card. I'm just glad I went for the $250 X850XT-AGP with it's 16 pipes and proper clock speeds. Heck, I can even RMA my card should it burn up.

It would be nice if they would release cards closer to the upper end and not aim for just certain price targets with lesser cards. Why not a 7800GS-AGP instead?

I would buy one to replace my old AGP card. Seems to be perfect for my old rig. Not TOO fast, nor TOO slow.
I always thought the gap between the 6800nu and the 6800GT was too big. NV just 'had' to cripple the 6800nu with slow ram.

I don't think there is such a thing as "TOO fast"

you could grab an X850XT agp for $250.00 (50 AR) @ microcenter...that's a better deal.

Possibly they feel they're selling enough cards in PCIe and it wouldn't be worth the effort (or they couldn't supply a lot more 7800-class cards then they are currently moving).

Perhaps they also have decided that someone who is throwing down $400-500+ for a graphics card probably doesn't mind dropping another $200-300 for a new MB/CPU.

I always thought the gap between the 6800nu and the 6800GT was too big. NV just 'had' to cripple the 6800nu with slow ram.

ASUS actually released a 6800NU with 'fast' RAM, and a 6800GT with 'slow' RAM. Neither was a terribly appealing product for the price; GDDR3 didn't help the 6800NU that much (unless you got a good OC on the core), and dropping the memory bandwidth on a 6800GT actually hurts its performance quite a bit.

There are plenty of AGP cards out there, at least up to 6800U/X850XT speeds (including a lot of used/refurb ones). They only market NVIDIA could really tap would be people with an outdated CPU/MB that want to hang onto it but buy a 7800GT/GTX. I doubt there are enough people out there who want to do this that it would make a lot of financial sense. If they put out something that wasn't any faster than a 6800U or X850XT, few of them would be sold (since the old cards would be cheaper).

the bad news is the AGP 6800gs is 75mhz slower than it's PCIe counterpart, the good news is, i just saved 15% off my car insurance by switching to Gieco:disgust:

apoppin, there is a large market for agp cards, look at the stir the 6800gs agp caused, and remember the Diamond x1800 "agp" typo, it created a buzz.

IMHO i'm dissapointed by what the 6800gs agp has to offer. only it's price would be an advantage over the 6800gt. it's PCIe's counterpart competes nicely against the 6800gt in performance, but has the big advantage in price. i'm glad i decided to go with the 6800gt instead.

i won't buy this watered down version of a PCIe card

i am hoping some of the other partners will get a clue.

Shouldn't you be able to get an overclock to 400Mhz? That's only 50Mhz, seems likely. So at $200 (wishful thinking I know) wouldn't that be a good buy?

This card is CLEARLY slower then the AGP 6800GT... that should put a nail in the coffin of people thinking this card will be faster in some way. The only thing appealing about this card is the price-point (at least compared to other NVidia cards).

The fastest NVidia AGP cards still clearly remain the 6800GT and 6800U. If only they'd make an AGP 7800GT... and no, I don't think the huge number of AGP folks (who outnumber PCI-E folks in the real world, just not on this forum) all just happen to have an extra $350 bucks for a new MB/CPU laying around... maybe all we want to do is spring for a video card (not to mention the slight differance in time and effort in upgrading a video card compared to upgrading the MB and CPU).

There are plenty of AGP folks out there with otherwise fast-enough systems to warrant a 7800GT-level video card. There's also plenty of noobs who would buy one with sub-2GHz system not knowing any better. ATI and NVidia are both missing the boat on a lot of missing cash in their pockets for refusing to release any "real" cards for AGP.

Other then the price, I don't see much to get excited about with this card.
