Oh yeah i forgot FEAR did that. Remember trying to set it up b4. The only other game i know of that does that is C&C Generals.

If you have AOE3 the main menu screen is a good indicator. I get about 21 with max settings, 32 if i set shaders down to high.

Have always been afraid of OCing my 6600GT specially because I think(personal speculation) it's clocked down to prevent the HSI bridge from melting. Plus it already runs at 72 deg under load.

O/C'ing always shortens a part's lifespan . . . does it make a "practical" difference? . . . not usually unless it is extreme.

you'd actually have to' try it' to see if O/C'ing makes your temps shoot up or just go up by a degree or two . . . some people use a better aftermarket VGA cooler to keep temps low . . . but then you will lose your warranty if you modify most cards

and sometimes O/C'ing is just not worth it . . . for an extra FPS or two.

I'm not sure what you are saying here? The PCIe version overclocks even better-My eVGA runs@545/1220 no IQ issues. It cost less@$189.99 shipped, has a fully functional video processor, and@those speeds scores 6350 in 3DMock sdespite being a 12/5 card.

Question about the AGP version: Does your card have the copper based cooler they use on the PCIe, or is it the same the GT always had? Mine idles@42c and hasn't broken 60c yet during extended gaming.

1) I see minimum psu is 300 listed by evga. I have a enermax 350 with 1 hard drive, cdrom and cdrw. Presently running his iceq 9800p with never a problem. Think the enermax will hold me?
2) And last question, i have 2400+ with pc2100 1 gig. Will I get worthwhile advantage from the 6800gs over the 9800p without upgrading anything else?
Thanks so much

I moved from a 9800pro to a 6800gs and my Shuttle only uses a 250W PSU, I've not had any problems. And yes, you will notice a big difference.

Did a wee experiment with ocing think i'll leave it alone performance gain was tiny. Stock will do nicley.

I should still unlock those pipes when i get my 6800gs right? that will do no harm?

Mine goes up to 66/67C under load with the fan at 100%, and it's only at 500/1250.

Actually 400 points in 3DM05 is pretty big, esp. for only 6C temp difference. Check your FPS differences in real life gaming situations and you'll see.

Yes, you should still unlock. If you get any artifacts out of the extra pipes just lock them back up, it won't damage your card.

Nice unlocking on the 6800GS AGP guys. I'd still go with X850XT at microcenter like Apoppin did, especially now that the card is $239.99 - $50 = $189.99 and will be at least as fast as 6800GT @ 400/1100.

although its only at microcenter.... hmmm it looks like the reports around that the xfx has better nv40 cores than evga.

The x850xt is listed on the microcenter site but if you click buy it says that it is no longer available. It does have the x850 pro listed for about the same price as the 6800gs. Does the 6800gs perform better than the x850 pro?

I checked my fps it rises about 5 avg in FEAR, 6-7 in quake 4 but AOE III only shows 2 FPS. Seems to be highy game dependant.
I'm not sure the overclock is worth the gain but it all depends on how the card will last if it goes for 5 years clocked like that I don't mind but if it only lasted 1 or 2.

If it's a NV40 core in both why would XFX clock better than eVGA? Other components cheaper?

Seems like the board design (capasitors, however you spell it) is more heavy duty for the XFX. eVGA I think wanted to make different version boards. Maybe XFX just used some GT boards they had lying around? I don't know for sure.

it looks like many of the evga boards will have faulty pipes.. maybe they put there good cores for the 6800gs oc agp. xfx probally are using old nv40 chips that were 6800gts

Thanks for the offer. I'm sure you are a honest person but I would rather just buy it from a dealer. And yes, it is because your black. (joking)

How is your case cooling and temp? Supply air could be responsible. I have a 12cm exhaust fan directly above it, and no other slots filled.

I have been very impressed with the stock cooling, a bit loud, but much better than the temps I used to get with a overclocked BFG 6800GT OC AGP I had. Idles as much as 10c lower and load is even more dramatic.

wouldn't worry about those A5 the chips have high operating temps. I just looked up the specs of samsung DDDR3 chips. They have a max safe operating temperature of 125deg! Silicone is quite tuf stuff.

But cool it off if you can.

No arguments here. Temp reporting can be very inaccurate, and mantras about "safe" temps overly cautious. Stability is the real judge of wether you have heat issues or not. If you have checked for and eliminated IQ/PQ corruption, and have no other stability issues, then the temp is with-in operational parameters in all likelyhood. Longevity issues? I haven't had a single part failure with a card I bought new, ever. Used I have, but who knows what abuse it suffered before I got it?

Anywho, back on-topic, so bump for more AGP unlocking results. Hopefully we can determine if eVGA is indeed less likely to be a success than the XFX with a large enough database of results from owners of both. XFX does sound like the safer bet so far. Where have all the XFX basher fro last year gone? Pine has really picked it up?
