do you reckon i'll notice a big change from a 6600GT to a 6800GS?

(worst case scenario it can't unlock)

Can you lock pipes again if they are crap?

yeah you can lock again. one question though. how do you know if a graphic glitch in a game is due to a pipeline or just a glitch? i guess i could test by locking it back up and seeing if it is still there, but thats tedious.

Not totally sure. If it's graphical then it will most likley be localised to a particular type of object or shader. Being fairly uniform in distortion.

Speculation: but when you overclock the core to the point of artifacting you esentially have reached the limit of a pipe and it's failing so it'll probably look like that. Or if it's a memory issue textures in th memory get coruppted

Im going with the xfx unless uall think i should wait for 7800. I have a enermax 350w psu. I imagine the 7800 requires higher minimum psu than the 6800gs?

wouldn;t worry about the psu unless it's really weak. PPL have used the 6800GT's in shuttles with 250W PSU and they run fine

I might wait and see. I've thought about it and i'm not sure the performance increase from what I have will warrant the cost. IF they release a 7800 it will be bridge chipped and probably have a huge cooler on it because the HSI generates alot of heat so if your case is small it might not fit.

I presently have a his iceq 9800p which uses 2 slots in a coolermaster case so space is no problem. However I did just find out the xfx is 1000mhz memory instead of 1100 as newegg advertises. Are they going to release a oc version?

I just got an XFX 6800GS AGP from Newegg. I unlocked the pixel pipes but turned out they were bad. The sixth vertex unit was ok, though, so I left that on. An overclock of 365 core and 1050 memory is stable. I guess I'm noy one of those lucky ones, hehe.

Well, IF you can unlock it to a full 16-pipes without any problems, YES, it's definately worth it. I myself went from a 6600GT to a 6800GT and the jump was sizeable and definately noticeable. If you can unlock the GS, you'll get a GT and notice the same thing. Of course, there's always this...

Yeah, if you can't unlock the pipes (and as I suspected earlier, not all will... it's NO GUARANTEE with the 6800GS), then you're stuck with what you paid for... a 12-pipe 6800GT. I don't know how big a differance being between a 6600GT and a 6800GS has on gaming performance. A 4-pipe jump instead of a 8-pipe jump... dunno if it would be worth it then or not.

Bottom line, if you already have a 6600GT and you CAN unlock the 6800GS, it's well worth it. If you're worried you'll be one of the unlucky ones, either stick with the 6600GT or wait a couple of weeks and snatch a 7800GS if you can... at worst it's equal to or better then a 6800GT (and may be much faster... can't wait to find out).

Is it definitley comming out in AGP form? I'm tempted to wait i've seen alot of reports emerging that the pipes were not all good. And as you say in worst case scenario it won't be a massive improvment if I only get 12pipes going. Better look for that thread and see what news there is

Well, you're guaranteed a 4-pipe jump if you get the 6800GS... I don't know how good a jump that is... if it's anything like the differance between a 6600GT and a 6800NU, then the effect with no-AA is not much (slight edge to GS), but with AA, solid lead by GS. That's my guess though... I'm not sure.

What I do know, is if you DO end-up unlocking for a full 16-pipes (8-pipe jump over your current card), it's definately worth the jump... of course, buying a 6800GS is no guarantee of such... I'm not running any scientific poll, but I would say based on results I've heard on this forum, the odds you can unlock a 6800GS are roughly 7-out-of-8? I'm guessing.

According to this thread the AGP 7800GS is definately coming out on the 2nd of February. You're guaranteed at least 16-pipes with that card (I'm sure it's at least as good if not better then the 6800GT).

Hi Everybody,
I got my new EVGA 6800 gs today (Monarch). SWEET SWEET SWEET
I said last week I would report back, well here's the skinny. I have only had it for about an hour. I unlocked the pipes to 16/6 and overclocked the core/mem to 400/1100. I have not done any benchmarking yet. I did however play FEAR for the last half hour TOTALLY artifact free. This card kicks serious arse. I feel very lucky/happy as I got me a real good one. I previously was using a 6800 le unlocked to 16/6 128 Mb. I really am amazed at the difference. I will do some benchmarking and report back.

I'm glad that the bickering between you and Surgeon is over, I really enjoy your posts when you're focused.

I was one of the last ones to pick up the 6800NU AGP at $150, and I have to say that I'm glad that I did. I was able to unlock and when I edited the bios I was able to hit a pretty good overclock. Went back to stock bios and minor overclock for everyday use, but when I'm feeling a little randy I torque that thing and turn my fans all the way up.

Now that the 6800GS has hit agp and the 7800GS is around the corner, I'll wait and see what happens with prices, check the benchies and see if it's worth buying a while new system for PCI-E or just upgrading the vid card. Since I was laid off last August I've been trying to start my own business so disposable income is a little hard to come by just to be able to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at high settings.

I Ran some benchies on my new card:

EVGA 6800GS AGP 3Dmark05

Stock: 12v/5p 350/1000 4321
Unlock: 16v/6p 350/1000 4912
UnL OC: 16v/6p 425/1150 5592 *No Artifacts Project #1687496

I'm pretty damn happy with these results to say the least. I think I could even OC the card a little more and break 5600+! I dont see how the more extreme CO version can do much better than that. I believe it's just beefed up bios settings. As far as the cards out there now, XFX and EVGA, I really think it's a crap shoot. Both Joincamp and myself got very lucky with our Monarch purchases. It will be interesting to see if these last or get scooped up like the last of the x850xt's although those can be had for about $325. The Microcenter deal was a steal! Well off to some FEAR.....

I'm in New Zealand upgrading from a GeForce F[censored due to embarressment], and I'm trying to decide between '6600GT AGP 500/1000mhz' & '6800GS AGP 350/1000Mhz'.

Will the extra US$80 (gap between best deals avail to me) be worth it if my new 6800GS wont cope with the unlock/upclock?

8pipes vs 12 pipes
older GPU architecture vs newer GPU architecture
500mhz vs 350mhz
128Mb DDR3 vs 256Mb DDR3

No one seems to have 3Dmarked to compare a '6600GT AGP 500/1000mhz' with a '6800GS AGP 350/1000Mhz'.

I know chances are I'll be able to pump up the ammo on the GS, but if not, I don't wanna cop the extra $$ for something 2 fps better. Thanks my haxors :]

I would like to see a comparison too. Did anyone upgrade from a 6600GT to 6800GS?
I posted my benchmarks on the 6600gt thread. ~3250 stock and ~3600 OCed to 568/1040 (agp bus was oced to 70mhz too). Thats the kinda performance U can expect from a 6600. It'll run any new game at medium/high settings. Can only do AA at lower resolutions or in old games I keep af at least 2x. But it depends on your pc too only expect that if you have a similar spec of rig. I can't tell you if it's worth the extra $80 but i might wait and see how fast the 7800 agp is before deciding for certain.

is it feasable to assume that you can flash your 6800gs bios with a 6800gt bios if your pipes and vertexes unlock successfully via softmod? if so, has anyone round these parts tried it? or linky to someone who has....thanks ya'll....oh and i have an xfx 6600gt and an evga6800gs i will post vanilla benches, unlocked benches and oc benches.....say mon/tues evening (EST) timeframe.

While the 6800GS is clocked slower at the core, because of the pipes it will out perform a 6600GT. Even a 6800 (vanilla) can out perform a 6600GT.

If you want review sites that have a 6600GT while they are reviewing the 6800GS

I received my XFX 6800 GS AGP from zipzoomfly on Friday. Popped it in, unlocked the pipelines and vertex shader and got artifacts in 3dmark05. I locked back the pipelines and left the vertex shader open and the artifacts were gone. Overclocked to 400/1100 and was stable for a few hours until Q4 started acting funny. Currently running at 400/1050 solid with GPU idle temps at 45 and under load hitting 48-49.

First time post.
I too purchased an XFX 6800 GS AGP from zipzoomfly and have the same results as chill. I'm running at 400/1050 with the latest forceware. My last 3DMark05 score was 4800. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the zipzoomfly cards. Has anyone else had similar trouble unlocking the pipes?

By the way, I'm running a P4 2.8 with 1GB 3200 RAMwith a480W Thermaltake Power Supply. Is there a problem with my machine?

Well if your card is working at 'stock' settings, there is nothing technically wrong with it. We are just unfortunate and unlucky that our cards were not fully functional unlocked. Your 3d mark score is in the ballpark of mine. I get about 4800-4900 on the following setup:

P4 2.4c @ 2.8, 1 GB 3200 Corsair XMS, 380W Antec TruePower.

Unforturnately I have discovered another issue with my XFX 6800 GS AGP. I thought that everything was running fine with the 12p/6v shaders, but I was wrong. With the extra shader enabled, I noticed that every couple seconds or so during 3dMark05 or any 3d intensive game, the graphics frames would freeze for a split second reducing the frame rate. This was only resolved by locking back the extra vertex shader. Has anyone else encountered this problem or heard of this before? I thought I could bear with it, but when you're playing Q4 online and it suddenly freezes on you for a split second...you end up missing or dying . Looks like no extra pipelines or vertex shader for me.

Unlocking and O/C'ing is often that way . . . you got your money's worth but not too much more . . .

are you still running at 400/1050 solid? if so, you have a decent O/C and i guess pretty close to a 6800GT performance.
