i think i'll go for XFX but second DAPUNISHERS request for more data. I will be ordering mine next week so i'll post results when i get them.
Well, IF you can unlock it to a full 16-pipes without any problems, YES, it's definately worth it. I myself went from a 6600GT to a 6800GT and the jump was sizeable and definately noticeable. If you can unlock the GS, you'll get a GT and notice the same thing. Of course, there's always this...do you reckon i'll notice a big change from a 6600GT to a 6800GS?
(worst case scenario it can't unlock)
Yeah, if you can't unlock the pipes (and as I suspected earlier, not all will... it's NO GUARANTEE with the 6800GS), then you're stuck with what you paid for... a 12-pipe 6800GT. I don't know how big a differance being between a 6600GT and a 6800GS has on gaming performance. A 4-pipe jump instead of a 8-pipe jump... dunno if it would be worth it then or not.I just got an XFX 6800GS AGP from Newegg. I unlocked the pixel pipes but turned out they were bad. The sixth vertex unit was ok, though, so I left that on. An overclock of 365 core and 1050 memory is stable. I guess I'm noy one of those lucky ones, hehe.

Well, you're guaranteed a 4-pipe jump if you get the 6800GS... I don't know how good a jump that is... if it's anything like the differance between a 6600GT and a 6800NU, then the effect with no-AA is not much (slight edge to GS), but with AA, solid lead by GS. That's my guess though... I'm not sure.
What I do know, is if you DO end-up unlocking for a full 16-pipes (8-pipe jump over your current card), it's definately worth the jump... of course, buying a 6800GS is no guarantee of such... I'm not running any scientific poll, but I would say based on results I've heard on this forum, the odds you can unlock a 6800GS are roughly 7-out-of-8? I'm guessing.
According to this thread the AGP 7800GS is definately coming out on the 2nd of February. You're guaranteed at least 16-pipes with that card (I'm sure it's at least as good if not better then the 6800GT).

Can you lock pipes again if they are crap?

Will the extra US$80 (gap between best deals avail to me) be worth it if my new 6800GS wont cope with the unlock/upclock?
8pipes vs 12 pipes
older GPU architecture vs newer GPU architecture
500mhz vs 350mhz
128Mb DDR3 vs 256Mb DDR3
No one seems to have 3Dmarked to compare a '6600GT AGP 500/1000mhz' with a '6800GS AGP 350/1000Mhz'.
I know chances are I'll be able to pump up the ammo on the GS, but if not, I don't wanna cop the extra $$ for something 2 fps better. Thanks my haxors :]
While the 6800GS is clocked slower at the core, because of the pipes it will out perform a 6600GT. Even a 6800 (vanilla) can out perform a 6600GT.Originally posted by: Eggnog

I too purchased an XFX 6800 GS AGP from zipzoomfly and have the same results as chill. I'm running at 400/1050 with the latest forceware. My last 3DMark05 score was 4800. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the zipzoomfly cards. Has anyone else had similar trouble unlocking the pipes?
By the way, I'm running a P4 2.8 with 1GB 3200 RAMwith a480W Thermaltake Power Supply. Is there a problem with my machine?

Unforturnately I have discovered another issue with my XFX 6800 GS AGP. I thought that everything was running fine with the 12p/6v shaders, but I was wrong. With the extra shader enabled, I noticed that every couple seconds or so during 3dMark05 or any 3d intensive game, the graphics frames would freeze for a split second reducing the frame rate. This was only resolved by locking back the extra vertex shader. Has anyone else encountered this problem or heard of this before? I thought I could bear with it, but when you're playing Q4 online and it suddenly freezes on you for a split second...you end up missing or dying . Looks like no extra pipelines or vertex shader for me.
