alrighty after much research and feedback from point of view support themselves

I (and a bunch of other people on various forums) found out that the problem is the cards bios's!!

the problem bios for 6800GT/6800U (well UEE too but they not official as such yet) is 05.40.02.10.14

to find which you have enter display properties -> advanced -> first tab showing "Geforce 6800 Ultra"

then to your right you'll get the GPU type (processor) IRQ the card uses and the bios version!

if you have the 05.40.02.10.14 bios you need to either..
A: flash your card with a newer build
B: RMA/return your card and ask that the store do it
C: dont do anything if you're not having problems, but you might at some point so see A or B

before you go on to flash your bios, remember that unless you got the go ahead from say support group for your card (ie POV, MSI, ASUS, etc)
if you dont... there's a chance you'll void the warranty (see option B)

ALSO THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE OF A BAD FLASH

more about this at the bottom

on to the bios flashing

one place with tons of bios files = http://www.mvktech.net/download.php
browse it and find a bios with a newer version than your current

i chose the evga for my card ftp://evga.com/N345.exe
ofcourse its not the POV but the one they sent me was the one i already had lol
this file makes a bootable floppy disk that you run and just need to say yes to flash ("y")
uses nvflash 5.03 that kinda sux

the best flash tool according to most of the various forums i've visited in the search for a solution
seems to be NVflash 4.42 http://www.mvktech.net/download.php?view.41

so what i did was make the floppy with the evga bootmaker.
then i deleted the evga NVflash.exe and Cwsdpmi.exe
i then copied the 4.42 exe files over instead

this way tho the boot is completely automatic and you do NOT get a choice to flash or not

after that i edited the autoexec.bat in notepad and put
"nvflash -f n345.rom -2 -p -u" (without the " ") instead of what was there (diff commands for all versions of nvflash lol)

if you DL a different bios but also DL the bootloader from evga
all you need to do is either
A: change new bios filename to n345.rom
or
B: edit autoexec.bat and replace with your new filename (max 8 characters)

remember this way you do NOT get a chance to type yes!

then you just have to reboot set floppy as first boot and let it run
the num/caps/scroll lock lights will flash in order
once screen says its finished, press ctrl+alt+delete NOT! NOT! NOT! the reset button (dunno but i was told NOT too so DONT)

now if by any odd chance you should fail to flash your card (power hickup, lightning hits your case, cola tipped over and fell into it, cat pee'd on it etc)
or the bios you picked didnt work with your card

what you need to do is replace the bios file (if it flashed correctly but doesnt work)

then same procedure and thats where this way is better as you dont need to know when to press a key it will run and complete
tho takes 30 secs to a minute so a 5 min wait should be enough

a PCI card is ofcourse handy to have that way you can see what you're doing

ofcourse can't take the credit for this as a LOT of people came up with this together
simply relaying the usefull info

thats about it
have a nice day

p.s this works with both FastWrites and dual channel enabled and different clock speeds
tho keeping 2d/3d the same is still a good idea as heat spikes are easier on the GPU that way

I can't find any Bios files for my PNY 6800GT card. Do you know where I can find them?

I don't think PNY 6800GT needs bios upgrade. I also have PNY 6800GT, and its bios is 5.40.02.15.01

I have the PNY and I have the same bios as above. The problem is that my card was freezing just like everybody elses. After searching around I saw on some other forums that this issue seems to be caused by a conflict between nforce chipsets and the 6800. They said that disabling fast writes in the bios will fix it, and for me it solved the problem immediately. Much easier than trying a bios flash.....

There is actually an updated bios for the PNY GT's its 5.40.02.15.02 I found it over on NVnews somewhere... I havn't flashed it yet though. Either way my card is flawless when I turn off fast writes.

My Asus V9999GE says 5.40.02.15.00

Guess thats a newer version, haven't experienced any freezes yet.

My BFG 6800 GT OC which I purchased a week ago has Bios 5.40.02.15.05 for whatever that's worth.

I have the 14 BIOS and I am getting some pauses. Turning off FWs didn't help.

MSI doesn't appear to have a newer BIOS yet.

did i double post ?
forums crashed for me while posting so..

FW off on nforce2 boards helps.. for like 5%
im on a nforce2 board myself and fw didnt help neither did 2d/3d clocks at the same

however have found that with the newer bios FW on works just fine..
and i actually get a few more fps with it on

still dont like different 2d/3d clocks tho

and you just need a newer bios if you have 10.14 bios with crashes and none of the other solutions helps

what most newer bios versions do is set 2d/3d the same
but they also fix some latency settings, fan settings and fixes a bunch of compatability problems
and a few other things

seems a lot of the bios's allow for higher overclocking due to memory latency changes

I have the eVGA 6800 Ultra on a NForce 3 250. I cannot get this to QUIT. Its making me mad. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

btw:
I have flashed the bios (twice)
Disabled fast writes
Took out the Creative A2 ZS card

Is there anything else I can try?

I don't get any freezes, but I have problems when I run the card in dual mode with 2 monitors. When ever I run a program like aquamark or 3dmark the primary monitor goes into sleep mode. I have to close the program for it to come back. Turning off fast writes does not help. I know the video card works in this mode because I have tried it on another motherboard (P4C800-E) I may try a bios upgrade, but I have not found one for the PNY 6800 ultra.

Serious question: is there a card that fast writes actually benefits without trashing stability? This feature is getting quite old now, and to date, i have never seen it work.

I have the xfx geforce 6800gt, amd athlon 64 3200+, k8n neo platinum and 1gig and I also have these freezes.

Iver tried many things, using xfx ultra bios, nvidia ultra bios, setting the 2d/3d voltage the same, setting clockspeeds the same, both, but only 2 things "worked"

Turning off fast writes allowed me to oc from 360 (my previous max before I got freezes) to 380. The second is setting the voltage to 1,4. This also allowed me to 1,4. Using both together I could go to 410 before I would get artefacts due to heat.

Problem though is that when disabling fast writes I lose a lot of cpu performance which is unacceptable.

But now I still get the freezes at 385 and higher and its really bothering me. For many people the problem was solved by using same 2d/3d speeds or other solutions including using a certain bios, but not for me

Is there anyone who has succesfully flashed his gt bios with and got rid of the problems once and for all without disabling fast writes?

It is really starting to annoy me, mostly because after having read so many threads about it, I still dont know 100% sure what is the cause. The first posts of this thread says it knows for sure its the bios, but can anyone reccomend a succesfull bios for my gt!?

btw: my bios version (xfx) is currently 5.40.02.15.02

edit: or if someone can tell my why I lose so much performance when disabling fast writes I would also be very happy, Ive heard no one else complain of worse cpu performance when disabling fast writes

Switching to AGPx 4 seems to have cured my problems. Give that a try if you're still having issues.

Thats probably why my eVGA 6800's ran like garbage, they were using ancient Bios..

My BFG is on 5.40.02.15.05 Which seems to be the most recent.

Is that an option in the bios or did you change it via the cp of the driver?

Because when I do that and choose apply, it goes back to 8x again.
