6800gt CANNOT o/c --> ultra!

hi guys,

this is my rig :
a64 3500+
msi neo2 platinum
2*512 kingston 3-3-3-8 dual ddr
msi 6800GT
Herolchi 475W

the thing is : my damn 6800 won't o/c!
i hear everybody here o/c their gts past ultra speeds but this is almost impossible for me!
every time i try core past 389mhz and mem past 1080, 3dmark 05 freezes completely.
And what's more weird, i don't think it's a temp issue, since right now (385/1079), it idles
at 49 degrees and after 2-3 hours of heavy gaming (nfs underground2 for instance) it's
never above 62-63 which is quite normal i think.

have i just been unlucky?
some other guy with the excact g.xard reached 425/1220... i mean WHAT?
the stock cooler seems good, nice-copper-one.
any thoughts?
(fast writes is NOT an issue, already checked)

i didn't say i was gonna rma it just because it wouldn't o/c as much as i would like.
it's just pissing me off the fact that it doesnt do sth almost everybody else's gt can.

op try you PSU, what is it?.. There are other things you can do..up Vcore though bios... Up Vcard core in mobo bios...get better cooling


But what some said is true..not all will get to ultra stock.

Errr, Zebo, I might question your reasoning here as well?

OCing is card/case specific (which you should know) and the fact that you are water cooling adds a variable to the equation the OP didn't say he had?

I wouldn't worry about it, the differences in performance between GTs and Us are trivial and too small to affect your enjoyment of the card.

I wouldn't worry about it, the differences in performance between GTs and Us are trivial and too small to affect your enjoyment of the card.

Other than benchmarking I can't notice any gaming difference when overclocking to Ultra speeds.

This is actually a poor chip. . I say poor because both Duvie and Nick1985 get them to 2700Mhz on air, with stock HSF IIRC!!! I'm on h20 and can only manage that but at 1.51 volts. I don't like pumping massive volts though CPU like some///

Got it from mwave.com. Price $150 retail boxed. I cut up the HSF and use it to cool northbridge which had an loud active fan, and motherboard mosfets. You can probably get OEM chip from monarchcomputer.com cheaper.

Well my BFG would not over clock very good with the stock cooler.
I got the Danger Den 6800 water block.
Now my card is clocked higher than the ultra and in 3dmark03 I get scores that are 13000 plus.
With the stock cooler I only got 11870 or something like that.
Even 3dmark05 I get scores in the 5000's range.
I went from being stuck at 370/1000 to 433/1060.
My gpu runs stable in every way runs games like Doom3, ut2004 and HL2 no problem.
My normal temp never really dropped that much but my gpu's temp under load never gets in the 60's now, always in the mid 50's.

i know your edit says you checked fastwrites, but i'm sure its fastwrites causing your prob my Evga had trouble going over 380 with FW turned on... now i'm stable at 405/1140 on my 6800gt
