My 6800GT dying with memory corruption and I am considering an upgrade.

I was going to buy another 6800GT since it was fine but my greed kicks in and made me look over to 7 series.

There were those times where I felt like I needed more juice to run full resolution on my 2005fpw.

Is 7600GT worth an upgrade? or should I go for 7900?

Another question.

I have Arctic-cooling NV5 on my dying 6800GT. Will I be able to use it on 7900 series too?

Thank you in advance.

a 7600GT is faster than a 6800GT and 6800 Ultra so it might be a worthy upgrade if oyu can get one cheap enough...but if you can find a 7900GS or 7900GT for not much more than that would be a much better buy.

I'd say it wasn't worth it personally, generally i don't think there's a lot in it as Stumps said, see if you can pick up a 7900GS, or an x1950pro (Assuming you are on PCI-E?)

If you do want to save a bit, the 6800GS runs on par with a 6800GS, and should be much cheaper and easier to find these days...

Try and go for a 7900GS or X1950Pro as said - 7600GT doesn't seem like enough of an increase to pay for a whole new card.

Upgraded my gf's machine from a 6600GT to 7600GT. After I sell her old card, the total cost of upgrading would be something like $25.

Before she was barely getting by at 1280x1024 0xAA 8xAF on CS:S, and couldn't play R6:Vegas. Now she's 1280X1024 4xAA 16xAF v-sync enabled and CAN play R6:Vegas.

Don't know about going from a 6800GT.

There ar recertified 7800GT's at the egg for ~$130. Though there might be a risk, it should be a bit better than the 7600GT.

edit: linky

But, if you can, try and get an X1950Pro or 7900GS/GT. They will offer a larger performance boost.

Hope that helps a bit

6600GT can't handle AF. I used to be able to run CS:S with 4xAA/0xAF at around 50 FPS with a 6600GT at the same resolution.

Err? I've gamed on two different 6600GTs, her eVGA one and my old XFX 6600GT (AGP). I can't recall ever having a problem with AF, rather AA was much more taxing.

4xAA was very playable for me. AF was okay for 1024x768 but at 1280x1024 it would stutter at times (i.e. a 360 turn).

A 7900gs goes for a bit more than a 7600gt, but IMO is well worth the price difference. A 7600gt is only a marginal upgrade from a 6800gt.

Thats exactly what I would have said but added "a lot" between "is" and "faster"

well the 7600GT isn't all that much faster than a 6800 Ultra (maybe sometimes )...I just put faster..well because it is...but hardly worth replacing a fully functioning 6800GT or Ultra for.

Speaking from experience, I went from a 6800 Ultra AGP to the 7600 GT PCIe with the 939 ASrock dual SATA II board. Honestly, I did not see a difference. I sold the 7600 GT and bought a 7900 GT, which was definitely a visible increase, which is what I'm running now. Also, what manufacturer of 6800 GT do you have? If you still have the original heatsink from it, you could put it back on and attempt to RMA...

Overall, 6800 GT -> 7600 GT is NOT worth it, unless you're getting it as a dirt cheap upgrade (sell old card, get new, pay difference).
