After hours of reading on the volt mod for the 6800gt, I decided to go for it.
For those who don't know the 6800gt has a stock 3d voltage of 1.3, while an ultra and ultra extreme has 1.4, and possibly an option for 1.5v.
I used NVflash 4.42 to copy my current bios. I made a backup of the stock bios just in case. Then in windows I simply bumped the stock 3d voltage from 1.3 to 1.4 using Omniextreme editfx 1.5. Then went back to NVflash and flashed my new bios with the upped voltage. Took all of 10 mins.
Before volt mod:
My stock bfg6800gt oc has clock speeds of 370/1000.
I have been able turn it up to 400/1100 prior to mod and play doom3 for hours or run benchmarks with no problems at all, though when I did a detect optimal frequencies I would only receive a max suggested setting of 400/1050. temps were about 53-55 idle and 72-76 max load.
with 66.81 drivers my 3dmark03 score was 12678 and 3dmark05 was 5215
After volt mod:
Detect optimal frequencies suggests 420/1110. So I am certain I can still turn it up some above those figures. Temps have of course increased a bit. 54-56 idle and 75-79 max load. No big deal, I plan on ordering an Artic Cooling Silencer and slapping some AS5 on there.
with 66.81 drivers my 3dmark03 score is now 13030 and 3dmark05 is 5425.
There is no artifact issues so far and I will test what my max frequencies are over the next week or so.
I know some of you will say why didn't I just buy an ultra. Well when I bought my gt, I orignially wanted an ultra, but there was only 1 store in my city that had any hi end cards in stock, (this was the first time I heard about BFG) and this was the top one available at the time. Besides if I had the ultra, I would push it anyway.
I can't speak for other 6800 manufacturers, but BFG definatley makes some quality products.
