6800GTO / Far Cry issues

I've just bought Far cry, installed it and hit play and waited to be impressed.. Which was not to be.. I get big black squares around things I've shot, when I pilot the vehicles, I got a big black square surrounding the vehicles as well.. When swimming I see blue see through blocks around waterplants and boulders look waaaay too bright compared to the rest of the scenery.. When I'm inside a building walls and stuff look way too bright and weird as well.. All the settings for play are maxed out.. I.e. on high or ultra high

Just for info, when I play doom3 everyhting looks great and works fine..

My setup:
Dell 8400
P4 3.4Ghz
1Gb DDR2 ram 533mhz
Geforce 6800 GTO (unlocked to 16/6)
Using Nforce 71.81 drivers
The system is not overclocked.

do the words "unlocked to 16/6" not even give you a hint?

the only other thing is drivers but I would assume if you did a Firmware change that you are capable of knowing that

Hey releemhui,

I thought of that as well, I reset them to 12/5 and ran the game again, no cure.. And I would have thought that doom3 would then have given me grief as well.. Being the tougher game on the card, but that runs like a dream..

the patch is critical for many cards. and it's up to v1.31 now.

BTW, FC hit the bargain bin a few days ago . . . it everywhere at retail for $19.99.

Absolutely georgeous - more so than HL2 or Doom iii or PK:BOoH or Chronicles of Riddick or Thief-DS . . . . or . . . wow!
(not too crazy about the "gameplay or story" yet - but just started)

It doesn't sound like it's your problem, but just be aware that different games stress different parts of the video card. My brother's unlocked 6800NU gets artifacts in the water in FarCry but Doom3 looks just great. That being said I second the motion for the 1.3 or 1.31 patch. I had better luck patching it over the top of the 1.1 patch instead of just directly applying it, but maybe they've fixed that problem.

I've got one of those dodgy MSI6800GT cards that has only 12 pipelines and 5 vertex units (I think this is mainly a problem in the European market).
So not sure whether that makes it a 6800GTo or 6800nu ???
Anyway, regarding Farcry. Without the patch Farcry autodetected everything to low settings and forcing high made graphics washout. Post 1.31 patch the graphics are fandabbydozie!
Just need to work out some strategies to stop the sneaky b@st AI sneaking up on me!!

snedger, you are aware that MSI will replace that 6800GT with another, fully functional, proper 16 pipe /6 vertex 6800GT? http://www.techpowerup.com/?2105 . Either take it back to your retailer, or contact MSI support ( which i here is very good) and tell them the situation. I'd bet with a little effort, you would end up woth a proper 6800GT

Thanks everyone fot their contributions! I applies the patch (1.3), which was a bit of a drama.. :frown: As I hadn't installed it in the default dirctory. But by applying the /a option I was able to unpack it and copy it into the game dirs.. What a difference, I think those are the most amazing graphics I've ever seen.. One hitch still though, when I run it with full anit aliasing and anisotropic filtering, plus vsync it tends to crash with a weird expection message.. Oh well.. if I leave those on a lesser setting or completely off it runs fine and still looks great!

Hey Snedger, the GTO denomination is not a standard Nvidia model, only Dell stocks these cards.. They are 6800 ultra's who either haven't made all the tests, hence the disabled pipes, or couldn't handle the higer clock speeds. Lately though Dell has had a bit of a shortage of parts it seems as most GTO's can be unlocked and overclocked to ultra speeds with no drama's whatsoever.. Seems Dell is short on more stuff as they also gave me a P4 3.4Ghz instead of the 3.2Ghz that I ordered

If you have had good experience with MSI then you are very unfortunate.

I wrote to MSI on the 5th of Feb and am still awaiting a reply.
My retailer claims that they have not heard of the problem, which is not surprising as in the techpowerup link you refer to, MSI have only publicly admitted the problem in Germany.
MSI have replied to some UK peeps and they are offering to replace the 6800GT with something that they are calling the 6800GTX.
I shall be patient and hopefully MSI will sort me out before I need to get a 2nd card for SLI, although I am not looking forward to being without a graphics card=computer for the time it takes MSI to do the replacement.
