So, in anticipation of getting a GTX 1070 later this summer, I bought a Dell S2716DG 27" monitor as it was at a pretty good price on Amazon. I just received it now, and havent' been able to get my PC to switch to 2560x1440. I have a 6850 - does it even support 2560x1440? If yes, how can I get switch it to that resolution from the Win10 recommended 1920x1080 resolution?

I have run a 27" 2560x1440 monitor on a 6870 for several years. My model has a single-link DVI and a dual-link DVI port. You have to use the dual-link one. Still on Win7, not on Win10 so can't answer specifics for that.

What exact 6850 model do you have?

edit:
Just saw Elixir reply. Can 2560x1440 monitors use HDMI 1.x and get 60Hz?

Yes, that's correct. I tried using DP, but it wouldn't display even after setting the input to DP. I haven't used the DP port in the 6 years that I've had the GPU. I'll try it again.

you need to use the dual-link dvi or display port, HDMI is limited to 1920x1200

Ok, I just tried DP, and nothing displayed after I switched it to the DP input on the monitor. It just goes to power saving mode. Do I need to change any settings on my PC before switching from HDMI to DP? Unfortunately, the monitor does not have DVI.

Do you got both outputs going into the monitor now?
If so, remove the HDMI one, and use DP.

Just tried this, and DP still not working. I just read through the Dell monitor forum, and it seems that this is an issue with the monitor, and possibly for those that were manufactured last fall though don't quote me on that. Seems like they're swapping out monitors that have this issue.

Once you select the input source as DP, power cycle the PC and display.

My Win 7 idles the monitor to sleep if I select DP input after switching on the PC. However, if the input is selected before startup, no problemo..

See of this works .
