Slower than either. AMD redid their naming convention. 57xx was midrange in the 5000 series and 58xx was high end, while 68xx is midrange in the 6000 series and 69xx is high end.

6850 and 1GB GTX 460 are nearly identical in every respect.

they all have 960. the only ones that had 1120 were ones that some reviewers got.

sounds like you dont even know the names in the first place. :biggrin:


the 6850 is tiny bit slower than a 5850 and there is no 5950. the 6850 is about 25-30% faster than a 4890.

I just threw one in my LAN rig last week. The performance is tremendous and it overclocks nicely. It runs a little hot compared to my GTX 460s, but doesn't pass 68c on load, so that's no big deal. Every card is different in its thermals.

I have the gigabyte version and for some reason, the fans default to 75%. So you have to manage it a little bit. Otherwise it's a beast of a midrange card.

I think I'll hold off another 1-2 weeks and see whats on sale then. Not sure if I should get a 6850, 5850, or 6870.
Amazon also had the 6870's for $205 a few days ago I think.
The 5850 is on sale for $170 on newegg.

Wouldn't the 5850 be a better buy? It is faster than the 6850. Everyone says the 6850 is faster at tessellation, but even in games with tessellation like Metro 2033 and Dirt 2 the 5850 is faster in benchmarks?

The 6850 sounds like it would be a great replacement card for my 8800gt; light on power usage, respectable performance, capable of driving more than two displays, and admirable acoustics (at least according to SPCR's review of the ASUS version). Still, at the end of the day I have to ask myself...do I really need this? As much as I'd like to splurge on it, I think the answer is no.

In case I change my mind, does anyone know how the acoustics on the Sapphire compare to the Asus version?

Go to Silent PC Review and do your homework. You'll get the most accurately informed information there.

They reviewed the Asus 6850 about ten days ago. I think they suggested the fan speed profile could be improved, but that it was a very quiet card. There's a good chance that would apply to the Sapphire as well -- compare the fan shrouds to se if they're both reference designs....

Then fan at around 50 percent blended into my yate loons in my antec 300. Any higher and it got much louder.

Nice to see the price of those cards dropping down again.
