Of course an i5 can't go up against a hexa core. But even for "high end" gaming you way as well buy the highest clocked i7 quad rather than a server platform that has been rejigged for the consumer market. The obsession with chasing FPS will only drain your wallet.

Did you read the article I linked to? A 6900K outperforms or equals the 7700K in the majority of titles that they tested (despite having a major clock speed handicap), whilst having much greater utility for things like transcoding, streaming etcetera. The HEDT platform is just much more robust despite being a generation behind.

But it's not for everyone I agree.

@ Carfax> Intel have not cut HEDT prices just yet. That was just Microcenter and only cosmetically.

EDIT> Congrats to your purchase, enjoy the CPU. If there will be price-drop i was talking about, i will be all over it as well. Preferably 6950x :-D We shall see.

Enjoy your new processor and there's no need to address concerns about instead getting Ryzen, getting less cores and clocking more, cost efficiency, or not upgrading at all... it's about what makes you happy and the 6900 is a badass processor.

You
For God's sake man, you're making me repeat myself.

Like I said before, my decision to get a 6900K is not driven by performance. It's driven by market conditions. This is the best time to offload all of the extra hardware that I have so I can get the most amount of money for it. RAM prices in particular have gone up, and I have a perfectly good 32GB DDR4 3200 RAM kit sitting around that I paid $207 for originally, which is now worth $250 brand new on the market.

When Skylake-E drops, RAM prices might still be high, but used CPU prices will drop due to all the people trying to sell their CPUs. Hexcore CPUs in particular will lose the most amount of value, because Intel will be making hexcores mainstream next year. So like I've been saying, this is purely a financial move.
You went ahead and got the 6900k, so I guess it doesn't matter, but I think I would have just sold the unused cpus, continue using the overclocked 3930k, and pocketed the difference. That is unless you need the extra cores for something besides gaming. After all, even if you do recoup part of the cost by selling old hardware, the 6900k still cost you nearly a thousand dollars, a steep price to pay for the difference in gaming from a nicely overclocked 3930k.

Edit: don't mean to rain on your parade, do
Enjoy the new processor.

you need 8 cores just for gaming?

Um, show me where I said it was just for gaming. I said I'm primarily a gamer, but I also do other stuff like encoding as well.. In fact I'm going to be encoding some of my favorite Blu-ray movies to x.265 as soon as I get my 6900K

You mean my 5930K I presume. Anyway, what you said was one of the options that I considered. But doing that would have resulted in my 5930K losing a lot of its intrinsic value when Skylake-E becomes available this year, and Intel's mainstream hexcore CPUs become available next year.

When it comes to selling or unloading hardware, the most important thing to consider is timing. Now is the right time to sell my hardware, the 5930K included. A 6900K being an octacore CPU will retain its value much better over time than hexcores, until whenever I decide to sell it.

Yea, I meant the 5930k.
