So I had an idea... I just installed Vista Business 64-bit and have been reading up on Vista's supercaching. I was thinking - what if one were to buy a massive amount of RAM? Since it's a 64-bit OS it should be able to address it all, correct? With supercaching it should be able to use it all, correct? So, if I put 4GB more in my computer, theoretically it could cache everything I typically use in RAM and it would be lightning-fast when it comes to loading everything.

Whaddaya think?

The only problem is I don't know if my motherboard (965P-DS3) with two sticks of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820220095

would like adding either two of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231111

or two of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141238

What do you guys think... could it be worth it?

If you like throwing away money, sure why not, I'm sure there'll be some kind of improvement.

Well that maximum supported memory on that board is 8gb so that should be fine, as far as performance who knows, but that pqi ram with 4-4-4-12 timings is pretty slick for the price.

Vista can use it all. I'm running 8GB on 2 different Vista boxes here and it FLIES. SuperFetch can put that RAM to good use.

well its probably not entirely naf. vista is supposed to cache much more intelligently than xp so it would make use of the memory after some uptime and plenty of multitasking, it would probably be a very nice smooth and fast user experience to have if you can afford it.

:Q

I envy you!

I have noticed Vista does utilize RAM very intelligently, which means i'd like to go 4 GB...of course than means running 64-bit...

Yeah, I love it; unfortunately it's only 667MHz, but I've been running it at 850 all winter with no problems - things get flaky only up around 900MHz, and I haven't played with the voltage any besides a 0.1V boost just to be sure. Not bad at all! I heard about it from someone somewhere and figured I'd give it a go. It supposedly is great at overclocking.

Yeah, read up on "Supercaching" - this thread is very informative: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=34&threadid=1999401&enterthread=y

hm since i upgraded to 2gb from 1gb it seems firefox uses double heh, almost 500 mb at 30 tabs. using more caching? if true i don't mind i guess.

sorry to derail, but 30 tabs? is that "crazy eyed" avatar modeled after you during surfing sessions?

ReadyBoost can only use 4 gb atm, but it is so worth it (if you are using less ram)
from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetmag/issues/2007/03/VistaKernel/

If you aren't already using a device for caching, and the new device is between 256MB and 32GB in size, has a transfer rate of 2.5MB/s or higher for random 4KB reads, and has a transfer rate of 1.75MB/s or higher for random 512KB writes, then ReadyBoost will ask if you'd like to dedicate up to 4GB of the storage for disk caching. (Although ReadyBoost can use NTFS, it limits the maximum cache size to 4GB to accommodate FAT32 limitations.)
