From what I've gathered, this is the Ricoh 7063A ATAPI drive. Aside from some busmastering driver incompatabilities it appears to be a respectable drive. In another thread it was mentioned that this drive can't do CloneCD (whatever that is, it wasn't explainied).
What I'm interested in finding out is whether it's functional under Linux. Browsing the hardware compatability lists (and The COmputer Geeks Hardware Discount Outlet) suggests that Ricoh IDE drives don't have a very good track record under Linux. Does anyone have this drive running under any flavor of Linux? Any further input would be appreciated. Thanks.

CloneCD is an app that allows you to make almost 1:1 copies of CDs, no matter SCMS or long tracks or most oftenly used forms of protection. More info on their home site, including list of comapatible hardware, and demo download.

If this really is a Ricoh drive, it should be compatible with CloneCD.

Currently Philips, HP, Sony, Ricoh, Mitsumi, Plextor and other CD-Writers are supported.

This quote comes from the Clone CD order page linked through their website. If this is a Ricoh drive supporting CloneCD, its a good deal.

According to CloneCD's websit, only the Ricoh 7063A supports CloneCD (among their 6x drives). If this is a Ricoh, it's the 7063A, as the 63A is 32x and the 60A is 24x. Still, it doesn't look like a Ricoh, so I have big doubts as to whether it is or not. Then again, I don't remember many manufacturers who actually made 6x drives--didn't most go from 4x to 8x?

Strangely enough, Ricoh's page doesn't show RAW supported on the 63A...

Found a coupon on techbargains that works for $15.00. The 15 off 50 that supposedly expires 12/30/00 doesn't work-amazon says it has expired. The 15 off 100 that expires 11/30/00 works. Thanks this is a great deal for $65 shipped.

Is a firmware update needed to make it a Ricoh 7063A?

If it works fine with your software and your system, I wouldn't risk a firmware update. There would be no gain.

Also, if this is a Ricoh 7063A it should be CloneCD compatible and do DAO Raw Writing right?

Mine has finally shipped. Scheduled delivery date of Nov. 28. Pretty slow for something ordered on the 17th. Of course that was a Friday and there is a Holiday in between, but I'm still being impatient, hehe.
