The Focus is a great car. I had a 2012 Titanium and traded it in for a 2013 SE with 201A. I can tell you that you're better off without MFT. The "base" system in the SE just works without any of the annoyances that MFT introduces.

Plus everything is much easier to get to with the dedicated buttons.

I love MFT in my 2013 Fusion Ti. But I can see how it can be not for everyone. One thing I want to mention though is that at least with my system there are about 3-4 different ways of doing something so you can always choose the most convenient at the time. I think peoples problems with it is that they treat it as the sole system for doing anything.

Spending 20k is more economical than driving what you have?

Math. Use it.

Never said it was entirely about "economics". It's also about spreading around miles between vehicles to keep their service life longer. I do want a more efficient vehicle, this is true. But I'm not doing it to save money as a primary purpose. It also happens to be a more enjoyable to drive and easier to park on a daily basis than a big ass van.

At the rate we're going my wife will have 100,000 miles in 5 years on her Camry. Our plan was to have that car go to our oldest kid in 10 years. Likely not happening at the rate we are putting miles on that car since we lean so heavily on it for the milage it gets. Adding in a 3rd car to spread the miles around makes the 10 year plan much more of a reality.

I'm locking in on fuel economy now, dirt cheap interest rates, and a more enjoyable to drive car on a daily basis.

Ignore him. That's his shtick. Anything over subsistence survival is a waste of money in his head. He's gone off on people repeatedly.

That looks like a lot of car for the money. Not bad. The interior looks just as nice as any luxury vehicle imo.

Nice buy. I can't stand the car price/package model these days. I would be perfectly happy with a base model Focus S sedan if I could get it with cruise control.

Well I'm butthurt. I would've payed the difference in price between that and my Mazda3, I think. Under 19k with those options? That seems like a damn good value.

Although I think the touchscreen thing would probably end up a love-hate relationship.

edit: BUT YOU DIDN'T GET A FLIP-OUT KEY, SO THERE.

With the exception of the dash controls (sorry, that's still an icky cluster of buttons), I'd say it's every bit as nice as an S40. For a good chunk of change less. It's just such a good chassis, and all the cars on it seem to have pretty nice materials and build quality.

Focus isn't terrible in terms of packaging. Base SE's are *very* well equipped to start. Power everything, 16" alloys, cruise, air, MS Sync, keyless entry. Pretty much every basic creature comfort an economy box would be expected to have. I could have got a base SE hatch for under $15,000. I just wanted a bit more "flair" and other add-ons that jacked up the price. The 201a pack adds leather which is already showing it's value with my kids. A damp rag and I can wipe mud and dirt off things. It also adds an arm rest with cupholders in the back which is nice, some appearance things like 17" gunmetal rims, leather shift boot and steering wheel which are nice touches. Plus a power seat and some other external trim stuff.

The paint and wheel combo was almost another $1000.

At least with the Focus I can get almost any option I want short a few things (backup camera, park assist, some other things) and still equip it with a manual transmission.

The car is a bit bipolar in it's fit and finish. Some stuff is done very well, others you can tell was done to hit a price point. The sound isolation and dampening is unlike any other economy car I've ever sat it. It's almost tomblike inside there. In many other cars I can barely have a conversation with 5 year old due to wind/road noise. In this car it's incredibly quiet. The suspension and steering is also incredibly dialed in. The car is almost *too* nimble and responsive. The slightest movement of the steering wheel and it thinks you want to go that way. I find myself swerving a bit when shifting because of a slight wiggle of the steering wheel. But when making more...spirited...moves the car just wants to dance and the wheel returns back to center almost on it's own and it will bite into a corner and hang much better than my old Mazda3s ever did.

And all of that suspension trickery doesn't come at the cost of comfort. The car doesn't feel abusive at all over the rough country roads I travel.

I'm still trying to find a good position to keep me comfortable over longer distances. The arm rest is too short and too low. Not sure how comfortable I would be in the car in an hour+ long trip.

The carpeting in the back and in the hatch is almost paper thin as well. Thankfully with the cold weather pack came thick rubbery all season mats to help protect. I'll probably cut my own floor liner out of a shop mat for the hatch area to help protect it better. Or maybe look for a drop in rubber tray for it.

The storage space is very limited. You have two very small, very snug cupholders wedged in front of the armrest. There's a large space in the doors that is too awkwardly sized to hold a water bottle. And the space in the arm rest is very small. Another inch or two wider in the car and inch or two added to it's wheel base and stretching out things would help greatly in very basic comforts without adding a lot of unnecessary bloat to the car.

I'm also annoyed with the way bluetooth works for audio. By default your phone will sync up to the car and work. But if you want to stream audio from it you have to go into a buried menu to enable the stream audio instead of USB line in. Or you can shout 3-5 times at sync to change to the "Bluetooth Audio" input. And then do that *EVERY*SINGLE*TIME* you get back in the car. Other cars I have done bluetooth streaming will automatically enable that once your phone hooks up. You don't need to manually add it or change to it as an additional input.

Outside of those issues though, I continue to get *a lot* of comments about the looks. The 3rd gen Focus hatches are not common around here and it's generated a lot of interest as to "what kind of car is that?"

It's very fun, really wants to be tossed around, and so far I've been averaging about 34MPG in a 60/40 Highway/city split without being intentionally fuel minded. For the price I paid I would have a lot of trouble matching the combination looks/options/fun/economy I got.

The mic in my 2012 focus is hit and miss. I often have to make sure I'm speaking clearly and projecting my voice at the mic (it's right next to the rear-view mirror), if I turn my head away from the mic and speak a command it will often miss it. On the other hand, sometimes it will clearly hear me even with the windows down; go figure.

I still like my Focus for the car portion, but the SYNC is a love/hate. Can't read more than 4GB without running into indexing issues and the Bluetooth seems wonky at times.

Other than that, it's been a great car. Wait until you get better tires on yours, makes it so much more fun in turns.

Really? That blows. I thought it took up to a 32gb one. I was looking into a little sandisk stubby drive that's about a 1/2" tall to plug in.

Space of the drive isn't an issue, it's the amount of music on it. It's ~4GB of music when it starts choking, has something to do with the number of potential voice commands it can understand and loads into RAM.

Two week follow up....

First tank of gas was around 30MPG. A touch on the low side. About half way through my 2nd tank and milage is up to almost 33MPG. That's with a 70/30 Highway/City split. I'm not babying it much. Hoping it continues to tick up a bit more as I break in the engine.

Speaking of engine, I'm still impressed at just how quiet this car is. There is almost zero engine noise coming into the cabin. If I've got the volume on the radio up a bit the engine is inaudible, even at higher RPM's. It's weird, especially with a manual transmission and being used to going off of engine noise as an indicator for shift points.

I'm still trying to search for a slightly more comfortable seating position, although I'm getting used to it. The arm rest really could have been a bit higher and a sliding option would have been very nice.

The stock radio is loosening up a bit with more use. A little tweaking of the EQ helped. But I think the speakers just need broke in more too. That said, the Sync integration is a true love/hate relationship. When it works I love it, when it doesn't I scream profanities in the name of Bill Gates at it. There just seems to be zero reason as to what affects the recognition ability.

The "App Link" function is awesome. I had yet to use a BT enabled car that can recognize Pandora streaming artist and title information. This one can. Not only that, you can tell it via voice commands to change to different stations. I don't even have to touch my phone for any of that. I can open Pandora by voice, change tracks, change stations, even thumbs up or ban songs. Awesome.

Oh and it's by far the best bluetooth quality I've heard. My Toyota vehicles sound *really* compressed and have that washed out streaming warble when doing Blue Tooth streaming, especially from an app that's streaming online itself (Pandora, slacker, ect). Very little breakup or compression over the "Applink" connection. And I can see station data. Yay! I just don't like that it takes about 2 minutes to fully navigate through the prompts and get everything hooked up. Every time you enter the car. If I'm going for a short drive it's not even worth trying.

Voice conversations over the BT connection are very clear, but quiet. Much better than either of my other Toyota vehicles.

I'm still getting used to how...taunt??? the overall driving dynamics of the vechicle are. Especially after driving a 4000 pound van for years. It's steering is on a string. Think about going a direction and instantly starts darting there. Not used to how responsive it is. Very different even from my old Mazda 3s hatch. That was a well poised car, but no where as twitchy as the Focus.

And I won't lie, I do have some buyers remorse wondering if I should have just gone all in on an ST or the new MKVII GTI next spring. But I know that I would have spent at least another $6,000 to get the options I have right now. And then wound up with more expensive to own/operate cars and probably a speeding ticket or two to go with the added bump in power

On your last thought, my sentiments exactly. ST is tempting, but I will skip it this go around (not buying now, probably next summer).

Soooo true. My son laughs at me raising my voice at the stupid computer when it does non-sensical things. He often asks why Apple didn't build the system instead of Microsoft, and there's no question that Siri does a 1000% better job.

Oh, and to foghorn67, at least test drive the ST. It's a pretty sweet package, though vi got a very nice deal on his SE. Now is a great time to buy a '13 because the relatively unchanged '14 is coming soon so people have been getting the '13 ST's very cheap.
