Again show me in the Constitution where it says it is U.S. Taxpayers problem

7-26-2006 1st shipment of U.S. aid arrives in Beirut

BEIRUT, Lebanon - The first shipment of American aid for Lebanon arrived in Beirut on Tuesday and Israel promised to open vital safe passages as humanitarian groups pushed more convoys of supplies to tens of thousands in the war-torn south.

The shipment included two large-scale medical packages "aimed at meeting the most urgent needs," holding enough medicine and health supplies for 20,000 people for three months, the U.S. Embassy said. The goods were given to the international Red Cross to distribute, it said.

Washington has launched the aid effort in an effort to show it supports Lebanon at a time when many here are furious at it for refusing to press Israel to halt the bombardment that has killed hundreds, driven up to 750,000 people from their homes and demolished infrastructure. Israel launched the assault to rein in Hezbollah after it captured two of its soldiers July 12.

U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman said the shipment was the first in $30 million worth of aid from the United States. "We hope it will address some of the most pressing needs of the conflict victims. The United States remained deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Lebanon."

Asked if there were a contradiction between U.S. arms sales to Israel and aid supplies to Lebanon, Feltman said Washington's position was based on "two pillars to how we need to deal with the conflict. One pillar is humanitarian assistance. ... The other is to find conditions for a sustainable cease-fire."

It's bargaining chips. If they accept our aid, then they need to do what we say if they want the aid to keep coming. If they are smart, and they want more aid, they will force Hezbollah out. It was Hezbollah that started this particular turn of events. There were no Isreali bombs dropping on Lebanon until Hezbollah started lobbing rockets into northern Isreal.

Dave, for once I agree with you. It is getting ridiculous that everyone looks at us first to solve their problems. And then when we want to solve our own problems, our way, we get lambasted. The recent WTO free trade debacle an obvious example.

It's not that we have to clean up after everyone else. Look at Africa, other than some token aid shipments we seem content to watch the place burn down.

But in the ME, stability is the name of the game. And when our oil partners there start asking us for help we're not really in a position to say no.

We do this now for one reason. It is because Bush clearly stated in the 2000 election debates:

The vice president and I have a disagreement about the use of troops. He believes in nation building. I would be very careful about using our troops as nation builders. I believe the role of the military is to fight and win war and therefore prevent war from happening in the first place. So I would take my responsibility seriously. And it starts with making sure we rebuild our military power. Morale in today's military is too low. We're having trouble meeting recruiting goals. We met the goals this year, but in the previous years we have not met recruiting goals. Some of our troops are not well-equipped. I believe we're overextended in too many places.

Thus, because Bush is now attempting to break all campaign promises, he MUST be a nation builder, he MUST overextend our troops as far as possible, he MUST keep having trouble meeting recruiting goals, and he MUST not keep the troups well-equipped. If Bush doesn't do these things, he might accidently fullfill an election campaign promise. And that means the universe will collapse on itself.

Cut all aid to Lebanon and stop encouraging and sending arms or any kind of military aid to Israel. That would solve the problem and cause my tax money to be spent on me (or the US itself) rather that someone else whom we shouldn't give a hoot about.

Look at all these little things. So busy now. Notice how each one is useful. What a lovely ballet ensues so full of form and color. Now, think about all those people that created them. Technicians, engineers, hundreds of people who'll be able to feed their children tonight so those children can grow up big and strong and have little teeny weeny children of their own, and so on and so forth. Thus, adding to the great chain... of life.

I agree, and I usually ignore dave's thoughts due the excessive RRR in everything he posts.

Heck I don't even agree with Rice over there trying to do anything. I saw screw it. We have wasted some much time and effort calling for cease fires and peace deals that its a total waste.

all they do is just end up reloading a start firing again a few years later. Let them duke it out, secretly nudge other middle eastern countries into fighting and killing each other then we come in and take over and divided up land, oil and whatever resources the middle east has amongst the rest of us.

The USA is in the process of being looted. So naturally, opening up the spigots of cash flow wide open to other Nations around the World will provide the cover.

After Lebanon's civilian infrastructure is destroyed guess who will get the contracts to rebuild?

HINT: No need for contract bidding where heaven forbid, someone like you or me might benefit. This is all to be put under the disguise of National Security. Which is used to funnel all profits to a select group of insider corporations. Who just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

Maybe because the weapons and technology used to devastate Lebanon were from the US. About 30% of US foreign aid goes to Israel every year, which totals around 6 billion.

Personally, I don't have a problem with giving humanitarian aid. It's a sound investment of good will.

I'd prefer we provide aid instead of us not and Lebanon falling into chaos. It's a matter of national security.
