Instant rebates allow a store to reduce the price of an item for a short while without reducing their normal retail price. Customers tend to hold off from buying when they see ticket prices yo-yo-ing.

Mail-in rebates allow the companies involved to claim the rebates as an advertising expense for tax purposes which can then be written off as an advertising expense.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

I don't know if this is a fact, but it's my personal opinion on rebates ...

I noticed that rebates really started to increase with the past few years. I also noticed that alot of places changed thier PM policies (ie staples used to match %155 percent, now they only PM). I think that the rebate thing happened so that people would stop doing the price matching and so that the people would go to the store and actually get it (as well with the other reasons people suggested).

But like, if you see CD-R's at best buy for $3 after the MIR, but like $23 before it, you can't go to staples and do a PM on these. And for me, that is a 50 minute round trip as opposed to a 10 minute round trip that I used to make before these MIR's.

I'm liking the Fujifilm CDRs for $5 after rebates (cant tell what rebates from pic... prolly 2 of 'em... one IR and one MIR)...

These are the Tayo Yuden's... at least last time i was at my BB they were... with the screw top and all.... perhaps this time i'll actually buy more than one 50-pk

Problem w/ the FujiFilm CDRs spindle is that their ebate program seems dead in the water these days; a lot of people (including myself) are reporting that they haven't fulfilled the offer yet. They claimed the ebate program only takes a couple weeks to pay up, and many accounts are that it used to be that quick. However, it seems you'll have to call and haggle with them for it these days.
