How does SUV's come into play here? You put these 7 people in a small Neon, the result would have most likely been the same. In a mini-van? Same.

They hit some tree's, everyone knows... tree's > Vehicles.

That is not even the point here... sad how people try to twist stories around to make their petty arguments look better... in this case, at the expense of 7 lives. Grow up.

WTF are you talking about? Its called being descriptive.

Sigh, If he had put 7 people in NEON you'd hear the same sh1t from NEON lovers (erm, if we could find one.. ).

I was referring to people that brought up the 'SUV's are stupid, dangerous, ect ect' and brought it into this thread. Not the thread author (unless that was his intentions). The 'twist' i was referring to was more of a avoiding the point than a twist i suppose, but none the less, the point of having "SUV" said in the thread is irrelevant to my argument, the B.S. i was talking about are those that came in here just to talk about the SUV's in general, rather than the ones who died in the car wreck.

Man, enough with the SUV bashing already it's a dumbass driver and nothing else. My ambulance is bigger than any SUV out there and even speeding down the wrong side of the road, jumping medians, driving down sidewalks, running red lights, and all the other crazy stuff our accident rate is EXTREMELY low. (never been in one myself) The reason for that is we know what our vehicle is capable of and we know how to look for hazards and the idiots that don't see/hear us. You would be amazed at some things drivers do when we are around...

Bottom line is that idiot drove beyond their limits in an unsafe manner and ended up killing 7 people, total dumbass. I feel sorry for the innocents in that car.
As a fellow ambulance driver, I concur.
:Q

There is NO SUCH THING as an ambulance driver! There are paramedics and EMT's that drive them to work but the days of "ambulance drivers" has been over for 20 years. That is my biggest pet peeve ever, don't ever call me an ambulance driver or you will be riding in the back of it. (not you personally, but people in the general public that use that phrase)

Relax ambulance driver.

Read Sid59's post:
damnit .. SUVs give people false confidence
This is SO true. Ask any woman that drive an SUV and she'll tell you that it makes her feel more secure. This is ridiculous since they're far less safe than 99% of the cars on the road, but true nonetheless. They feel invincible in those things. It's crazy.

Granted everyone does it and it's the driver's fault not the SUV or the company that makes the SUV, but given this it's hard to trust people who drive SUVs when most of their ilk are fvcking morons.

All I have to say is:
A woman driving an SUV caused the worst crash in Maine for nearly 50 years?

I am Ilmater's total lack of surprise.

Read the title, we know what he was getting at.

If it had been a bus I'd have written bus in the title. Then the pro-bus people would be complaining.

Sheesh people.

I guess I need to restate this. Can't believe this thread has gone on this long!

Indeed. Most of the posts are about stupid drivers and the dead kids. There are some about SUVs being dangerous but seeing how the people killed were driving one it isn't entirely off topic.

This is so NOT true. I am a woman who drives an SUV and it does not make me feel more secure.

Ford explorers are so safe! How could anyone die in one? ...or even get hurt, for that matter.

one time my cousin and his wife were going somewhere, and the car ahead of them was a trailer camper thing with a ford explorer attached to the back, and the thing went off the road and destroyed the explorer, inside the camper was a grandpa, a mother and the teenaged kid who for somereason, that explorer belonged to, so then my cousin saw it happen, and went to go help, the first thing the kid said was "wheres my explorer"

Yep. One time back from Vegas, this dickhead in an SUV passed on the right shoulder. Then all of a sudden we see the SUV flipping over a few hundred feet ahead. I wonder if the stupid bastard ever learned from that.
Wow, not often you see vehicular justice served up right in front of you when people flagrantly disregard the law. Oh, there are so many times I have wished for something similar. Nice. Do you know if the guy lived or not?

I got to witness several dozen vehicles with disregard for safe driving wreck. On I-95 N, just north of Richmond a few years ago, there was horrible freezing rain. The road went from wet to a sheet of ice in a matter of a hundred feet of driving. I slowed to about 5 mph, and had the flashers on. I lost count of the nice shiny brand new SUV's that went racing along, doing about 25 or 30 mph that wrecked in front of me, bouncing from guard rail to guard rail, until eventually they ended up off the road. The morons apparently thought that SUV's could drive on ice while in 4WD. (I drive an SUV myself - it wasn't the SUV's fault at all, 100% driver error.) In NY, if someone has an accident like that, they're ticketed for "failure to drive at a speed reasonable and prudent for road conditions" - weather doesn't cause accidents. People do.

I see no other SUV drivers, who cut people off, drive insanely fast, and ride people's asses, like Tahoe drivers. Most other people who driver other SUVs are not so bad, from what I've seen. For some reason, Tahoe drivers stand out. On thing I notice, is when traffic is merging and everyone is slowing down, they are also the ones who find a hole, and floor it, not caring if people are slowing or not. Also they are the most seen still trying to get around everyone else, even though the lane has ended. They will just drive as fast, even if it means having to pass on the shoulder, just to make a gain a car or two.

Update:

Seven people from South Portland were killed yesterday in a high-speed accident on Interstate 95 in Carmel.

Investigators say a Ford Explorer went out of control on Interstate 95 in Carmel yesterday, after swerving into the breakdown lane, possibly to avoid a collision. It clipped a car, went down an embankment, slammed into trees and flipped.

Two women and a child were thrown from the SUV. The other four, three children and a woman were found inside the vehicle.

In a statement from State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland, the three women are identified as Kelley Armstrong, 28, of 17 Burnham St, South Portland; Danielle St. Paulin, 29, of 92 Stanford St., South Portland and Hope Gagnon, 29, of 58 Sawyer St., South Portland. Also killed were Gagnon's three children: Deion Stuart, age 8, Tkeyah Stuart, age 6 and Ariana Stuart, age 4. The fourth child is Kristian Armstrong, age 4, the son of Kelley Armstrong. Troopers said Gagnon and Armstrong were thrown from the SUV, along with Tkeyah Stuart. The four other bodies were found inside the vehicle.

State Police said the 2004 Ford Explorer was rented by Armstrong at the Portland Jetport Hertz office. Investigators say speed is be a factor in the crash. Initial indications from investigators is the SUV was traveling more than 90 miles per hour.

Investigators believe Gagnon was driving at the time of the crash

The Explorer is being examined at the State Police crime lab in Augusta. Investigators say they hope they can place where the victims were seated and if any mechanical problems may have played a role in the crash.

The two other cars involved in the crash were driven by Nikki Yawn, 19, of Bangor and Jamie Atkinson, 21, of Etna. Yawn's 2004 Jeep Cherokee was clipped by the Explorer after it passed Yawn and Atkinson in the breakdown lane. Yawn and Atkinson were not injured in the crash.

Oh man, here in Vermont that always happens. I always laugh when I white knuckling it along in my little compact during a nasty snow storm while SUVs blow by me at 55mph. A couple miles down the road they are usually in the ditch. 4 Wheel drive = 4 wheels slipping. SUVs are a little better in snow, but they aren't a license to ignore a foot of snow or glare ice conditions. I just hope they don't clip and kill some one when they go off the road.

I would rather have the idiots from mass doing 55 then 7 when their is a half inch of snow on the ground. At least when they go fast they are out of the way or off the road.

Heh. That happens too. There's the people who go 70 or whatever and dump it during the first snow storm. Then there's the people who go 10 when there's a dusting or it rains during the spring. Can't ever win I guess. I just go however fast I feel like and screw everyone behind me, so I can't rant on the people going to slow for me to much.
