I was just suggesting it as a trial. Pay $30 and you can basically try TMo all you want. If it doesn't work out, you're only out the $30+tax, keeping your AT&T plan in place.

I was addressing the plan in general terms. Not with regards to anything you wrote. It's an enticing plan but not realistic in the long term.

If you're bringing your own Google device, you can sign up for anything. If you want to do pre-paid, I'd order a micro-SIM from their web site and activate it yourself online.

The main question is whether the $30 plan works for you.

hmmm, so I am looking at buying the S4...

where would the best place to buy a google edition S4?

As far as I can tell if I bought the one off of t-mobile that wouldn't be the google edition? Or can you just root it to google edition?

Anyway... I was thinking of the 50 dollar plan since every place I go has wifi. I doubt I'll be downloading 15Gig movies with a cell phone so I'll have to keep the home wired.

That's the cheapest option I can see with an S4... Any better ways to go if I don't want a 2 year contract?

50.00 plan is text talk unlimited and half a gig with throttle back so no overage.

There's only one: Google. Of course, Google is horrible at selling actual items.

Also, it will be the same hardware as the T-Mo (maybe with a different design on the -- removable -- battery cover). So yes, you should be able to just flash the Google firmware onto the T-Mo version.

That's the cheapest postpaid option. Notice that T-Mo doesn't do contracts even on postpaid any more -- you just have to pay the phone off (if you did installment plan) before you drop them.

I would also consider two cheaper prepaid options, if you don't need to roam on AT&T (postpaid gets roaming, prepaid doesn't):
(a) $30 plan -- 100m, unlimited texts, 5gb data
10c/m overage but you need to leave some extra money in the account ahead of time
(b) Straight Talk $45 plan -- unlimited everything (in theory)
The AT&T version of ST has been notorious for throttling, cutting you off after a certain amount of use, etc. But from what I can tell, ST on T-Mo has been pretty much wide open from day one. I dunno if things have gotten harsher since they switched over to only selling T-Mo SIMs, but it's at least worth a try for a month.

Like I said, I need more talk time than anything. Don't really text. and Data use is on wifi mostly. So, don't really need a lot of gigs. As I would prefer "UNLIMITED" if I was to get anything data plan. But I guess if I'm mostly in wifi hotspots It's not really worth it to me to buy a large data plan.

Yeah, I once had ST for about a year. I dunno. Tho, I never really did much data on it and what I had was super SLOW anyway. I thought about buying an iphone with ST then I heard if you went over a couple of gigs you'd be screwed so...... Ah well...

Thank you for your reply tho. I figure there weren't very many options other than wait for the price to come down. I suppose if you could wait till S5 came out, maybe you could get a good deal or some sort of sale. I was looking at googles nexus 4 but ... While the price is half the cost, the phone looks watered down compared to the S4.

So do mobile carriers like T-Mobile actually offer the Galaxy S4 Google edition on contract?

Or does it have to be purchased through Google first?

Keep in mind the $30 plan is prepaid, your coverage will be less than their post-paid, "uncarrier" plans.

My plan is $60/month (haven't needed unlimited just yet to pay the extra $10) and it gets pretty darn good coverage, but my buddy has the $30 pre-paid plan and outside of urban areas his coverage is not so good.

My current situation: Fulfilled contract on AT&T with iPhone 4, currently unlocked. Paying ~$150 for me and the wife every month, will be adding another line this fall. Neither of us uses 2Gb - most data on wifi, low minutes. Do not travel outside of DFW metroplex too often, 4-5 times a year.

Wanting to move to prepaid plan to lower costs, obviously.

Considering ST since AT&T network is used and I have never had a problem with it...do not understand concept of roaming. Since their network is so big what would the difference be?

$30 100 minutes talk | Unlimited text | First 5GB at up to 4G speeds

Used it for over a year and a half, with Google Voice, PBXES.com, native android internet dialing.

I also use a old hacked linksys vonage box as an ATA for my house as the 2nd extension with incoming calls ringing all extensions.
