I bought a Dell 700M and only got 256mb memory with it. I would like to add another 512, so I bought a stick of OCZ memory from newegg (pc-2700, sodimm, 2.5-4-4). I put it in today, but when I do the system turns on, but nothing comes up on the screen. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

You can download a copy of the 700m's service manual from Dell's support site.

I did pull the keyboard (that was a bitch) and put in the OCZ and same thing. It turns on but no screen. I looked through the Dell Manual already and it basically says that pc2700 SOdimms works, I did notice that it said 3.3volt, I somewhat thought it was a misprint because every SODIMM that newegg sells is a 2.5ish volt.

I also emailed Mushkin and oddly two people emailed me back with two completly different answer. 1 basically said to buy the RAM strait from their site and it will work fine, the other said Dell uses proprietary memory and that Mushkin would have to special order it.

Here are the two emails.

Dell's require proprietary memory. This means we'll have to special order the part. A 256mb module should be fine for what you are using your computer for. The price on this module is $65. A 512mb module is $130. Let me know if you have any furthur questions.

Subject: Memory for a Dell 700m

I recently purchased a Dell 700m and would like to add 512mb or 256mb of memory to it. I have 256mb in it currently. The module that is installed is under the keyboard so I would rather not fish it out if I don?t have to. What would be the best RAM for me and how much. All I do with this Laptop is school work (word, excel, email...etc...) and surf the web.

Thanks
Kevin

System:

1.6 Pentium M (Dothan)
256 RAM

12.1 WXGA screen

Hi Kevin,
The 512 MB PC2700 SODIMM (part #991011) is the module that would be best with your laptop. That is currently $112 on our website. The 256 MB PC2700 SODIMM (991010) is $55 right now. In the unlikely event that the modules aren't compatible with your laptop, we do have a 14 day full refund return policy.

Best regards,

I went looking though newegg's website to read the personal reviews, normally I think these things are pretty useless, but this time I was looking for someone that had actually used it in their 700M. I ran across this it is bigger than I had originally wanted, but at 193 it is somewhat a deal compared to the 170 Dell wants or 130 (plus shipping) Mushkin will command for 512 of RAM. Long story short I RMAed the OCZ, and purchased this. I will reply with results as they come in.

kd2777, I use that same Kingmax 1GB PC-2700 module in my 700m and it works fine. The Kingmax 256 & 512 should also work fine.

I have one of the Kingmax 1GB sticks on order from newegg. It is currently "on FedEx vehicle for delivery", so I'll find out later tonight what the results are.

Thanks

I plunked in a generic stick of 2700 in mine, (originally came with my Averetec). works perfectly.

Although I did pull the keyboard & found the populated ram slot is the one under the keyboard before I realized the 2nd slot (unpopulated) was on the bottom.

I think the problem is in the latency of that OCZ sodimm. The 700m uses 2.5-3-3-7...so the 2.5-4-4 might be having issues trying to run at tighter timings. I put a stick of PNY (Bravo chips) in there, and it worked fine...people at notebookforums reported success with many other brands including generics, Kingmax, Corsair, Crucial, etc...

Got the 1GB in a few mins ago and it works like a dream. Now at 1.25GB of ram I offically have too much RAM for a laptop that is just going to surf the net and do office docs. But I could not be more proud
