Tested the latest official 71.84 WHQL driver and it did not fix the "jittery" rolling screen issue when running HL2 and CS:S widescreen resolutions: 1680x1050 DVI or 1280x768 VGA with SLI.

Workaround is to select 1280x1024 or any other 4:3 resolution or run 1680x1050 in a window.

NOTE: The install was on a clean XP SP2 image that I use to test each new driver version as it is released with my Dell 2005FPW DVI and Sony 17" Widescreen VGA with (2) BFG 6800GT OC.

Also 71.84 still has the issue where games will hang when started after the PC has sat idle for some time and had been awakened from monitor shut off / standby.

This is just a thought, but have you considered that if your using the same XP image to test new drivers, could there be something not right with the image?
I have run into this in the past. Just a suggestion, but you should try a fresh full time consuming installation. I would if it was me anyways.

And, have you installed the latest Dell driver for your LCD screen?

Man, if I had about 5,000 bucks to blow on a comp, that problem might apply to me.

I have seen numerous posts regarding this same issue from other users so I don't believe it is a problem with my install.

Here is a post from another user I found that details the problem better:

I read a post in another forum suggesting that this problem can be fixed by changing the timing values under the Advanced Timing settings of the Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates driver tab. Have you already tried playing around with any of these settings?
