71 degrees Celcius CPU Temp.... uh....

Title says it all. I've got an ECS K7S5A motherboard, fitted with an Athlon XP1700+. Just replaced my heatsink/fan with a Alpha Pal8045 and a 12dba Papst fan. (So much quiter now.) Using SpeedFan, my CPU temp shows up as 71 degrees celcius when I run at full load (Seti + Winamp).

Exactly, how worried should I be. It's been pretty stable for about 4-5 hours, but 71 degrees?!

krackato, while stability is usually a good way to say, "you're doing fine," 71°C seems quite high to me. Maybe a 2K RPM fan by Panaflo would help your rig out, w/o introducing too much noise in your system, hopw this helps

edit: Can't spell

does this cooler bold to the board, cause i had this same problem with my waterblock, and i found that the lip of the block bottom was ove the edge of the plastic socket createing a very small gap between the processor and the block, take the hsf off, and remount it making sure that the hsf lip does not sit on the socket lip

Well I just ran Seti and Prime95 at the same time. My computer reached 78C and then reset after like 2 minutes. So the whole stable thing is out the window. I'm going to get some Artic Silver 3 tomorrow at Fry's, maybe try to find a decent Panaflo fan at a hole-in-the-wall computer store, and try reinstalling the heatsink with more precision.

Thanks for all the replies.

Well, I used some acrtic silver 3, reinstalled the heatsink (I had it installed slightly wrong the first time) and reattatched the Papst fan, and I'm sitting at 59C at full load. Yeah it's a little high, but it's actually 4 degrees cooler than the temps I've been running at for the last 8 months, and it's sooooo much quiter. I'm happy. Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

Yeah, definitely better. Make sure that there's no components interfering with the heatsink; I have 8045's on 2 boards here, and they both (Shuttle AK35GTR and Epox 8KHA+) had components too close to the socket. I needed to slice some notches in the heatsinks with a Dremel. But I've never gotten a temperature reading above 45C on either of the overclocked Athlon XP's the 8045's are cooling.
Of course, just thinking of a few other factors: fan speed on the heatsink itself, and case airflow. I'm using ~4Krpm fans, and my cases have plenty of airflow.

Yeah, my fan is running at 1500rpms. I swear to god I put my ear right next to it and I could barely hear anything. I stopped it using my finger (since it's running so slow) and there was absolutley no audible change in the sound. I definetly care more about noise than temps or oc'ing. I'm going to be getting a panaflo quiet fan and replacing the fan in my PSU to further reduce the noise.

I had an alpha 8045 and I was getting pretty high temps. It was because the heatsink wasn't making enough contact with the cpu. I eventually gave up on the alpha and purchased an AX-7.

i heard xp can take up to 90c but those temps your getting aren't on-die temps so there prolly a few degrees higher than 71c.
