720P v.s. 1080i (p)

Is there really that much difference. I'm comming from a standard CRT point of view. I'm possibly getting a Hitatchi 720P to replace my 27" toshiba CRT.

Which Hitachi? It's rare a display will do 720p and not 1080i.

Hitachi has some Plasmas that they advertise as "1080i" that I think are actually 1080p displays with non-square pixels, which might be the origin for this question.

jello - You mean 720p? . You're right, though I really think the real world performance difference between well-done 1080i and 720p is a coin toss.

steppinthrax - the Hitachi will look great from where you're coming from. Just spend a little time in research and buy yourself a calibration DVD for ~$30 to tweak it as best possible. I'd encourage you to stay away from some of the lesser known brands, as the processing quality of the 1080i HD content (and I'm just generalizing before somebody skewers me) is questionable.

No, I mean 1080p.

(The native resolution on the "1080i" sets are 1024x1080 or 1280x1080 and given a designation of 1.1 or 1.3 mega pixels from Hitachi, so I think that the marketing department decided that "1080p" meant 1920x1080, so the lesser 1080 models with non-square pixels that were still progressive scan but not 1920x1080 got mislabeled at "1080i")

My bad. I've always assumed the accepted 1080p definition to include a ~2M pixel specification. Literally speaking, you've hit the nail on the head.

I was quite confused myself when I was in CC and seeing 1080i plasmas. I figured any answer I got from the sales guys was going to be BS, so I tried to figure it out once I got home and they sure made it confusing if I'm right about what's going on.

That's a pretty dirty handed trick. AFAIK those aren't part of the HDTV/ATSC standards.
