As of Friday, at least 1,700 people have been shot in the city this year, fewer than the last two years at this time when violence hit record levels in the city but well above other recent years. There have been at least 300 homicides, according to Tribune data.

Yet, murder is down 30% in Chicago and per capita it's not even in the top 5-10 of dangerous cities.

Most of the murders are between gangs. I think if the black market profits were dried up, then the gangs would lose their power, and murder rates would come down.
Drugs & Prostitution are two big income sources for gangs.

The staggering numbers attracted national media attention and resulted in a press conference Sunday morning during which Chicago police chief of patrol Fred Waller blamed the violence on gang members who shoot into summer crowds at night.

“They take advantage of that opportunity and they shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit,” Waller said.

Over the weekend, shooters targeted large groups at a block party, a funeral and other outdoor gatherings.

The origin of the weapons is NOT to blame for the root cause of the problem. While it may be a possible enabler (and I wouldn't go that far), you need to look at the problems Chicago has created for itself before you start pointing the finger at other states.

Strange, what about those cities is different that makes them have such high murder rates? Considering those cities are well above the average of the state, your idea that its loose gun laws does not seem to fit alone, as there appears to be a larger underlying issue.

If it were loose gun laws, why do other large cities in those states not have the same stats? Is there some other correlating factor that we can look to?
