Lark888, read my post. IBM will not warranty harddrives that large computer companies (HP, Compaq, etc etc) bought and integrated into their systems. The warranty for these drives are provided by the companies themselves. (HP, Compaq, etc etc) The drives buy.com sells are bare drive OEM's which are covered by IBM's warranty.
There are two types of OEM drives.
Large System OEM's
1) Drives bought up by big companies like Gateway, HP, Compaq, Dell, etc to integrate into their computer systems. When they buy the drives from IBM, they get a significant discount because a) they buy in huge quantities and b) they provide the support for the drives and now IBM. These drives are not meant for resale as individual parts as computer companies will not provide you with any warranty or support for the drive if you don't own one of their computers.
Small Business OEM
2) Drives sold to small computer businesses that are the bare drive only without any retail packaging. These are the drives that buy.com carries. They carry IBM's warranty even thought they don't have the retail packaging.
The only real way to check to see if the harddrive is under IBM's warranty you have to get the serial number off the harddrive and run it by IBM. If the drive was one by a Large System OEM, then IBM will let you know what company they sold the harddrives to and to call them for support.
