that aside, is the default hsf on the 7600GT really loud? AND, will there eventually be a handy replacement (ala NV Silencer or VF-series, etc.)?

I picked up a 7600GT from ZZF (the MSI branded one) last week. It's nice and fast, a definite upgrade from my unlocked 6800 (switched from a AGP comp to PCIE, so it's hard to really compare directly given the new CPU and everything).

As for noise... well, it's the loudest thing in my machine by far. Much louder than my HSF on the CPU for sure... but it's a pretty quiet HSF I have. It's certainly louder than the stock cooler on my 6800 (it was a leadtek w/ large copper HSF).

I have the EVGA CO card. The fan is loud at boot, but settles down afterwords and is barely audible. My system is pretty quiet, but the server behind me in my office is a bit louder. I can hear it over the server at boot, but after that it blends in nicely. Not sure if other brands have this feature though...

My comments about noise were while gaming - during normal windows usage, it's pretty quiet. Still louder than my HSF or PSU, but not bad. I can only hear it because the computer is currently ON my desk instead of under it while I get things installed...

Hah imagine that...someone else also coming from the Leadtek 6800's (those things are loud). Even when I tamed it down to 70% in 3D mode, it's still pretty bad. And it sounds like the 7600GT is even worse =(

I have one, and its really fast. BitTech also just did a review, and the 7600gt is faster than ANY last gen card. It beat the x850xt significantly. Mine is running in a system with a 300watt psu.

This card, if the fan was a bit quieter, would be the perfect card IMO.

Hrmm...how loud is the fan at idle? I mean, if it's loud at idle, then I'm definitely not gonna buy it then (or at least till a aftermarket solution is devised).

Since it is supposedly a drop in core on a 6600GT, then 6600 coolers should work. And of course, the Zalman universal coolers are always a good choice

:| A warning for anyone who applied for this 7600GT rebate from EVGA for Zipzoomfly purchases; EVGA just rejected my rebate with the reason being that I didn't send in the serial number with it. I checked the form I submitted and there was no indication that the serial number was required anywhere on the entire form. I don't know if the newegg or Monarch EVga rebates have similar malfunctions, but be careful to watch that EVGA sends you your rebate check.

I just resubmitted the rebate with the serial number even though it was EVGA's mistake. I'm afraid EVGA may take a lot of money from unsuspecting customers due to this mistake. I hope they're more careful in the future so customers can trust their rebates. It's hard enough sending in a rebate the first time. :Q

I posted this warning on two relevant threads due to it's importance to protect unsuspecting customers; mods please don't delete it.

Don't know if this is the same type of card, but I just bought a MSI Geforce 7600GT for $174.99 with a @20.00 rebate. Total was $179.64 including the shipping. $159.64 after the rebate. It looks like a good deal to me.

They probably meant to include the serial number, but forgot. You and others that complained to them made sure that they put that in the subsequent rebate forms.
It's good to be vigilant with rebates. There are always a few out there that seem to be playing games with comsumers.
