Would a 7600GT be capable of playing games like BF:2? BF:2142? UT:2007?

It will definately be able to play BF2 / BF2142 just fine, depending on what resolutions you are hoping to play at. BF2142 is based off the BF2 engine and I don't see the FPS dropping terribly compared to BF2.

it'll play at LEAST medium settings 1280x1024 with 2xAA, 4xAF enabled...how so? because my 6600GT can run bf2 at those settings.

BF2/BF 2142 won't be a problem for the 7600GT. UT2007, however, we can't say for sure, but you'll probably be talking low settings.

iirc the UT2007 devs said a 6600gt could run the game on medium at 800*600, a 7600gt should be good for 1024*768 or 1280*1024

I plan on playing all games (that are currently out and 2142) at my monitors max res, 1280x1024, with everything on high without any HDR, AA, AF. If I can I'll enable HDR, AA, AF, but they are not a major need for me.

Will it be able to do that?

Or perhaps a wise one who doesn't want to drop $400 on a video card with DX10 cards just around the corner...

I'm in that category. Don't laugh, I'm still running a Nvidia 5700.

I just ordered myself a 6600, Asus mobo/Ram, and now looking at cards. I'm pondering the same thing the OP is, because I know in 3 or so months I'll be dumping $500 on a DX10 card. I want something to get me by for a few weeks.

One of the things I'm wondering about though is I have a 19" crt that I don not want to part with yet. I love my monitor even though it's small. Some of the resolutions in the benchmarks and comparisons are obscene. I'm perfectly fine playing at 1280 tops, even 1024 when need be ( which is often now because of the present card). I wish some reviewers kept that in mind that not all of us play games at 2000x2000 (arbitrary rez used for PoV). I'd like to know how cards work at my settings, not at max settings for a 30" LCD. Is there really a point now-a-day of going over mid range if I only have a 19 inch monitor? Even 1600x1024 is too small for me (plus I'm old: bad eyes).

From what ive seen the 7600GT is a fantastic card. It spanks the 6800GT in most of the benches.

There's a plethora of great cards if you are going to run 1024x768 or 1280x1024. If you've only got a 17 or 19 LCD that may well be the case.

A 7600GT would be more than enough for superb gaming at those resolutions.

I think for a extra $30 or so you could get the 256MB X1800XT which would floor the 7600GT.

I'm thinking about upgrading my 6600 GT now to a 7600 GT...

Remember that the 7900 GS won't be out for another two or three weeks, and even then, we don't really know how it will be priced, but let's just say you can get it for $190. The 7600 GT is $140 after rebates now, and may even drop lower from the 7900 GS launch, so that's a savings of $50 or more. When we're spending as much as we are now, that is a lot of money, so I think I'll just get the 7600 GT now. ^^

THG just put a review out comparing the ATI X850 , ATI X1800GTO and NVidia 7600 GT which are sort of in the same price range.

Wow, who's that desperate for a vid card that they can't wait 3 weeks for one ? Retail on the GS supposed to be $200, so I don't see why it couldn't be had for $175 in no time at all. Obviously, the Woot deal for $144 was hot, but in regards to vid cards, I would recommend buying more card than you think you need, simply because the first bottleneck in a new game will be gpu related, not cpu. So the 7900GS is a better investment than the 7600GT, unless you really can't put the additional $40+ into the purchase.

I upgraded my 6600 GT to a Gigabyte Silent Pipe II 7600 GT. It is an awesome, silent card that can play BF2, Oblivion, etc. just fine.
