7600GT vs. 7900GT

I'm debating between buying a 7600GT and a 7900GT for gaming, specifically Counter Strike: Source. Is it worth to spend the extra 50 bucks on the 7900 or will the 7600 do just fine for me?

Thanks,
Westi

what resolution will you be playing at?

if you plan on keeping that card for a while, then the 7900GT will be a good buy. also, would the 7950GT be in your range? its basically a lower clocked 7900GTX.

though a 7600GT would be perfectly fine for CSS, i would stick with the 7900GT for an overall faster card.

For $50 it'll be worth it in the long run. Not only will you enjoy better speed at higher detail NOW, but it'll also still be a "good card" for a longer time than the 7600 would.

Second that. X1950 Pro performs usually faster than the 7900GT and I don't know about over there, but over here it's cheaper.

Hey get the 7900GT, many of these are great overclockers, well worth it for the extra $50 I'd say.

My 7900GT is at 600/850(1700) with a Zalman VF700-Cu, I don't do volt-mods or anything obviously. Quite a bit of power for such a cheap card, in my opinion.

Right now, the 7900 or 7950 is definately worth it. I got the 7600gt a few weeks after it first came out (during the price gauging period...mofos), and it costed the same as the 7900s cost now. I doubt you need a 7600gt anyways for CSS source, so it's a better idea to get something that will satisfy current needs, and last longer for the future too.

The 7600GT should run the game at max settings with good enough FPS.

eVGA 7600GT KO is $126 after $20MIR at ZZF right now.

The 7900GT would run it quite a bit better though...

THG Comparison
HL2:EP1 @ 1280x1024, 4xAA, 8xAF
7600GT = 42FPS (KO would deliver a little better performance)
7900GT = 75FPS

So, as you can see, it's closer to a $100 price difference than $50, but it might be worth it in the future.

I would go with the 7600GT. If you are only playing CSS right now, and are only interested in playing this game, the 7600GT will handle it fine. In fact, the 7600GT is adequate for most games right now. Yes the 7900GT is a faster card and is capable of running games more smoothly than the 7600GT because of the extra power, but do you need that extra power for the games you are interested in? Some would argue that buying the 7900GT would be more future proof. However, DX10 is about to be released and the 7900GT is not a DX10 compatable card (from the information I have). So then you need to ask yourself if you want to spend the extra $$ on 7900GT, or buy the 7600GT and save the price difference for a new DX10 compatable card for later.

It is up to you. You need to weigh the pros and cons and make an informed decision.

im using a MSI 7600GT and in the cs source video stress teest it scored 138 fps

this is at all high settings 1280x1024 with aa and af on lowest settings

im sure a 7900GT is much better but i am toataly happy with the 7600GT

For the extra money, I would get the 7900GT. The eVGA ones overclock extremely well and would bury the 7600GT.

Its usually just clocked faster and nothing more. I say 7600GT now and upgrade to DX10 in spring or once you feel the need to. I think its pointless giving more than $190 for a video card right now with newer cards coming soon.

I run CSS with my Evga 7600GT KO at 1440x900 at max settings with zero slowdown. Going DX10 in Feb or once Crysis/UT2007 comes.

I was in the same dilemma as you 2 months ago. $90 diffrence between the two cards, but I picked the 7900GT over the 7600GT. It's a pretty nice card, but for CSS, there's no need for such a powerful card, get the DX10 cards when they mature, by then maybe a new cs will be out. btw, is anyone else having problems getting CSS to work right now, steam is telling me that the game is currently unavailable.

I just went through the same process and bought an O/C'd BFG 7600GT for $113 after rebate at NewEgg. My logic is that I don't want to invest in a new high-end card with DX10 pending.

I think the step up plan is pathetic. Most good cards are on backorder. Your better off selling your card and upgrading.

With that said if you want the fastest 7600GT(factory o/ced) here it is:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150182

If you trust rebates this is the best deal after rebate and is still factory o/ced but not as must:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143049

I personally don't like rebates because you might not get them. It took me 4 months to get one from eVGA and I would have got it if I hadn't emailed them several times. I think the XFX is the better card since the memory is clocked 1600mhz vs 1450mhz on the BFG and the core is 590mhz vs 560mhz on the BFG.

Only had it in a week, but so far yes. It was quite a good performance boost over the 6800GT/AGP that it replaced (I went PCIe and bought a new mobo too). I play BF2 1600 x 1200 everything but shadows maxed. Oblivion 1680 x 1050, settings cranked back just a bit. Railroads 1680 x 1050, tree density on medium. Good framerates all around.
