uh, i meant the medical school since the cost difference between out-of-state vs. in-state is basically an nsx (or porshe or m3 or ...)

You'll in time realize that your family doesn't suck, and that their adamance is only out of an ignorance that remains in immigrants. When you start to see the reason behind their attitude, you will soon realize that it is love. That said, sit down with your parents and explain yourself regarding this situation (and any other) in terms that they will understand. Explain to them that such a position is actually respectable both for its potential to make money and for its display of initiation (a resume filler). Explain that you have been taugh twell by them, that you know success is an important priority, and that you aren't about to let them down by doing this. Tell them that they should have trust in their teachings, trust that what they have taught you will be with you when you make these decisions, and many more along your path in life - long after they are no more.

I'm sure, you'll see their approval with wide smiles all around.

I switched from CS to Organizational Management 3 years ago and to this very day I still get lip from my mom about dropping CS.

Oh I feel you man! I was thinking of taking a semester off (heck, I planned on 3.5 years anyways, so I will still graduate in 4), but mom was like, nooooooooo, graduate now.

Well, now that I graduate, I am suppose to be travelling for 6-10 months. Well, I thought I was gonna start my career early with this one company, but I declined. So I want a part-time job so I can earn some $. Mom says, NO, don't work. I'm like, ok.....for wat reason? She has none...

And I say I am saving for a new car and she replies, you don't need a new car...

WTF

The problem with many Asian parents is that they are stuck in that f***ed up mindset believing that all their children should graduate school first and then get a job.

Yeah all Asian parents are like that.... my parents didnt' want me dating until I graduated university.. oh well. What they don't know won't hurt them

I feel so lucky my parents are not like that at ALL. If not, I would rather have parents who give me suggestions from time to time.

I was left to do what I want to, how I wanted it. They did not even push me to go to uni. I live my life at my own pace. Hurray!!!

There's nothing wrong with caring about your kids, but Asian parents need to realize that one needs to live his/her life as an individual. Having overbearing parents can create a sheltered environment which is probably more destructive in the long run.

A lot of Asian parents are in that old school mentality where the interests of the family is place above the individual. And there's also that face saving crap. I'm sorry, but raising kids under those conditions won't lead them any where in an American socity that values individualism and the ability to stand up for one's self.

my PARENTS ARE EXACTLY like that. They don't want me talking to girls much less dating them!

But now a days its 'easier' though. But no way I'd tell them that I'm 'going out with a girl for the day' or such like. Its always 'I'm out with friends' and that friend happens to be a cute girl

They are very focused on me studying though. I work hard and study.

My parents aren't that strict compared to some but they do have issues with me and girls. They always push me to work harder and harder. Good at times and just too stressful at others but I try to deal with it as best I can.

I'm SO glad that my asian parents aren't as strict as some other parents........

<< Maetryx: Dang..
Out of curiosity, what do you do now? And what did you major in?
>>

I majored in Chemistry at first, but figured out it wasn't for me after the first year. I switched to civil engineering because it sounded practical and useful. I graduated with a BS in 1994. I work for a large engineering/construction firm with an environmental engineering office in Fairbanks, Alaska.

I may go into construction management soon, pending the results of a job interview a week ago.
