Actually, yeah u can mod it. I have a cheap HP pavilion 501n. With all the extra drives and stuff I've added there literally was no air room. So I put a blow hole on the side and now it stays fairly cool. If I was able to cut a round hole through the steel case with just a hack saw blade by hand then u should have no trouble

if its not a gaming pc, under clock it... if NO games are played on it, honestly, its a waste of a card. You could be using an old riva tnt card for $10. But, my advise is, if you want to save some money, and dont mind the case looking a little scrappy, mod it. really... order a 2-3 120mm fans, depending on if you can fit one in front of the hd cage or not. like jonesthewine said, you would then dremmel a HOLE in the case, allowing the fan to do its job. I would install one up top between the edge of the psu and cd-rom exhausting, one in front of the hd cage intake, and one on the side mount intake, and leave the stock rear fan exhaust, that would make a world of difference, and cost pennies on the dollar in comparison to buying a new case, or even an aftermarket gpu cooler at that matter.

The case being steel makes no difference, steel will cut like paper with the right tools

Go to newegg and get a nice case with some 80-120mm fans already installed in it for like $45. That's probably your cheapest alternative. If you go with aftermarket cooling for your video card, you then void your warranty... so if something DOES happen with the card, you wouldn't be able to get a new one.

My 6800nu idles around 63 to 65.....the hottest I've seen it is in the low 70s.....but that's jumping out of a game and then looking at temps in the NVidia CP.

way too hot...mine only gets up to about 55 C under load, even when highly overclocked. Not overclocked, it hovers around 47-50 C.

Not way too hot... it's normal for a 6800GT with stock cooling.

77 in gaming does sound quite hot as my 6800U doesn't usually go above 78.

It also has a beefier heatsink than his 6800...

Well, then you should probably add at least 10 degrees on to that 70s reading. The temps drop surprisingly fast after exiting a game since it typically kicks into 2-d mode when moving through the menus of games.

Regarding temps, my 6800 GTO in my Dell 8400 case (not known for cooling!) runs at about 57C idle and 80C-ish at load. Not unusual to see maxes in low 90C as well (HL2, Far Cry, etc.). My GTO is unlocked and overclocked to 402/1102. This is on stock cooling, though I am deciding between the NV5 Silencer rev 2 or the Zalman VF700-Cu.

But he doesn't have a 6800GT. So, like the OP asked, yes it's a little hot for a 6800NU. Is it too hot, period? That's debatable... it's never a bad idea to get a better cooler though.

OP, judging from your last post, your temps are more acceptable now.

oh, yeah, good point! I can't believe every one of us on this thread forgot about that one. that only applies in the latest drivers. he may very well be using them, though...

It is if you value the warranty at all.

You might want to go with the NV Arctic Silencer with your case, because it vents all the hot air from the card out a pci slot, rather than dump the hot air back into your already poorly ventilated case. That should also help drop your cpu, mother board, and case temps too!

I was about to call you a lyer!!!! I knew you had to be getting to at least 60C!!! Don't worry about your temps, they are fine. And, just because one cards gets artifacts at one temp doesn't mean a completely different card will get them at that temp. Some ATI chips seems to get unstable at not very high temps, while many Nvidia cards I see are stable at higher temps. It all depends on how the card is built. 65 to 80 under load is quite normal for the 6600 and 6800 chips from Nvidia. Lower is always better, but those cards run hot, so don't worry about it unless you are seeing artifacts. One of mine runs about 72C under full load (the other a lil lower at 66), but I have some sweet extra cooling in my case.
